I'm not exactly sure if it's the right amount of denarii, but I'm certain I've upgraded most if not all my units to full att/def/exp. I play Seleucid. There aren't any pikemen in my army because I figured they're useless on a map with forest. I start by deploying my units farther from the enemy and plan to make him come down from the hill. The army is deployed almost simetrically 2 hidden cataphracts, chariots, silver legions and archers behind them, chariots, and 2 more hidden cataphracts. By examinig the battlefiled I know he'll be hiding some of his army in the trees in front of me, slightly to my right. My 3 militia cavs discover 4 units of warband archers that would wreak havoc if I had advanced with silver legions. Don't know how but I manage to lay in a surprise attack on those archers with my 2 right flank catas. He sends the axemen, general, and nearby cav. I loose half of my heavy cav, but his archers are decimated and pulled back. I think that this decided the outcome. I had all of my archers intact and they rained arrows upon his spearmen. I took out his cav with the left flank catas and now my archers were safe as they could be. Silver legions, supported by archers, steadily took out his main force of spearmen. Looking back on it - I'm sad I didn't buy a unit of silver shield pikemen, just to see how would they hold out against his spears. If any of you have expirience in this, I'm all ears.
