I really enjoyed playing this custom map, because it gave me a good sense of the time period it conveys. At first, I (foolishly) thought that the battle would be quite simple. After all, what are gladiators and mercenaries to the might of the roman legions? But after my initial cavalry charges were routed, I realized it would be a much tougher fight. On any difficulty level, this map can definitely surprise you with its toughness.
Balance: 9 out of 10
Though the slaves are nonplayable in the battle, they were given good enough upgrades and plenty of numbers in order to stand up to the roman legionaries. In no way is the battle one sided.
Design: 8 out of 10
Definitely showed that you put work into this map. I like the touch of the mountain pass in the back as the only real path of escape for the slave army once routed (if they're routed). Having the battle take place in the very corner does not let the player fully enjoy the entire map, however.
Creativity: 8.5 out of 10
I wasn't expecting the first little army to be there, which sort of put me on the spot right away. I like the little creative touches like that which make the map enjoyable and more challenging.
Overall, I'd say this is a very well done map. It provides good accuracy, balance, and shows definite insight and hard work. Way to go, HopliteMercenary!
