Rome: Total War 1.5 |
This is the latest update to my Amazons mod, which adds 3 Amazon units - Archers, Chariots, and Cavalry - to the rosters of the Hellenic factions. This release has some more game-balancing, making extending the recruitment time of the Cavalry and Chariots to 2 turns (which was my intent in version 2.0, but something I missed doing).
For those new to the Amazons, I used the model and texture of the Rebel Amazons from vanilla RTW. I made the Chariots recruitable and created two new units based off them, Foot Archers and Horse Archers.
Here are some pictures:

You do know that Greek spartans thought that arrows were coward weapons as they killed from a long distance. Thats how Xerxes won the battle of Thermoplye. |

You do know that 292 Spartans (120 of them Spartiates) surrendered to missile troops at Sphacteria after the remaining 148 of them were killed? The entire Spartan force thusly being killed or captured by "cowardly" missile troops, and showing their courage by deciding to surrender and live rather than die bravely. |

There is no point at all to dying needlessly. I do not blame the Spartans for surrendering one bit. But according to their own ethics it was a shameful, cowardly act. Meaning that they themselves were not above behaving in a matter that they considered cowardly.
I was trying to point that out to the previous individual who was apparently insulting all archers because the Spartans believed archery was cowardly, as if somehow their opinion upon it was important (a feeling you will not find many warlords such Genghis Khan or Atilla sharing btw).
In fact, archery is a very difficult skill to master. It took many, many years to become an expert archer. People such as Cretan Archers, Rhodian Slingers, Welsh Longbowmen, Steppe Nomads, etc... all began learning the art as children, typically practicing while watching over their herds.
Sparta, like most other Greek States, could not produce people with that kind of skill at archery. Like so many others do when they cannot match another in something, they insult them rather than try to better themselves at it. When it comes to warfare relying upon insults rather than innovation is a critical mistake, one which the Spartans would pay for time and time again when faced by light troops whom they could not counter. Hi Jack. If you would like to create a new unit, you can do so yourself without too much difficulty. Just go to the Modding Tutorials and you will find a full article showing how to create new units here: http://rtw.heavengames.com/rtw/mods/tutorials/unit_creation/index.shtml |

Hear hear, SubRosa - LeonidasOfSparta has obviously absorbed his notions of spartan society from the highly innacurate "300" movie. He would no doubt be horrified to learn that all Spartan troops were *required* to be boy lovers by Spartan Laws. Yep - it was compulsory! |
