Rome: Total War 1.5 |
This is a simple re-modeling and skinning of the Spartan Hoplites. They now sport a bronze muscled cuirass, bracers, and greaves. Their shield is emblazoned with a Lakedaimon lamda, and a red cloak rounds out their attire.
This mod includes only new model, skin, and unit card files. It does not change any of the game's original text files for unit stats, recruitment, or description.
I created these Spartans for Amazon: Total War, and decided to release them as a standalone mod as well. To learn more about ATW visit its forums here at RTWH: http://rtw.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/forums/display.cgi?action=t&fn=33

Hi Terruce.
Actually, I did give the Greek Cities a Heavy Cavalry unit using the same model as the Macedonian Cavalry. It will be in the upcoming version of Amazon Total War.
I found that there is a Greek Cities texture file for the unit already in the game. The CA never implemented it is all. So it really was not that difficult. Just a matter of finding the texture and its name, creating a new line for it in Descr_Model_Battle, then adding the Greek Cities to the ownership line in Export_Descr_Unit, and Export_Descr_Buildings. |

These are Macedonian. You can tell by the "A" on their shields. This is from the Alexander expansion, I think. I like the other one with the red shield and no shirt better. |

They are not Macedonian, and that is not an "A" on their shield. It is the Greek character for Lambda, which stands for Lacadaemon, the proper name of the state which the Spartans belonged.
It was common practice for Greek Hoplites to emblazon their shields with the first letter of their city to which they belonged. Basically an early attempt at a uniform to identify whose side a soldier was on.
The lambda what the CA used for the Macedonians is completely inaccurate. They never used a lambda symbol. In fact, the only symbol we have any evidence of them using was the vergina sun, and that only because it was found in the tomb of King Philip.
Nor is it from the Alexander expansion. It is an unused skin from RTW, which I altered to add some things to, such as the cloak. [Edited on 01/07/09 @ 10:58 PM]

I just want to say: fantastic mod! It really brightened up my game!
I am trying to make my own skins for the greeks to make them look better, yhough it will not work for me. I use gimp, is there any particualar way I should save the texture? Like compression and format-wise,thanks for any help. |

Thank you King.
When saving a .dds file for RTW make sure you set it to the following: For Compression choose DXT5. Check "Generate mipmaps", and make sure "Swap red and alpha" is not checked. Click ok, and exit. |
