First let me say "I hate the Romans - because as far as I know they are the only nation to make killing an entertainment industry. So I play Greeks or Carthaginian.
In RTW you are not well served by slingers. Which is more deadly, I'm not sure but the sling is cheaper, than bows and arrows, still deadly and I believe almost everyone had some skill with a sling.
I have been to Greece I never saw a tree except those foreign ones planted at the side of the roads. I was told wood is very expensive in Greece. In RTW 80 yards range is pathetic, that range is more like where David and Goliath started their fight. 600yds is possible when shooting at unit sized targets. I set sling range at 210 yards and use the "elite Rhodian slinger" Other slingers limited to 80 yards I take to be lower class much less skilled types. I also limit sling units to two maximum in an army.

When I was in the balearics I was told there were still many experts with the sling. I am quite expert in ballistics. Both arrows and sling bullets lose energy due to air resistance but as they start off slow they dont lose much velocity. I have not done any calculations but I think a sling bullet would arrive at long arrow range with more energy and less penatrative power as its not pointed.
ps, sorry I was tired and posted in the wrong place.
