Pontic Strategy on the field I find to be the most effective...
Early on, with single armies, it's best to have a base group of around 4 pikemen which forms the center of your army. 4 groups of hoplites split in half covering each flank, usually with 2 groups of swordsmen on one end. Pontic Javelinmen and slingers are your best bet, and great at luring the opposing army into your pikes. I save the cavalary; usually with one or two of the best being melee, for emergency support or charging the rear of troops engaged by pikemen, destroying siege engines,or chasing off ranged units. I use Javelin Horsmemen in a similar fashion, or I use them to screen my forces or lure the opposing troops into my pikemen.
