It was a cool November morning on the island of Rhodes. The year was 107 B.C.I was looking across the soon to be bloodstained field of Hermes, with the beautiful shrine to the messenger god on the defensive hill near the middle.Well, that hill was defensive for me and the other greeks...but not the Romans. My name is Jaetus and i am an officer in the greek army that is encamped on the plain below. The field of Hermes is located right on the shore, with a shrine to Hermes directly in the middle. On the east side of the field is the Greek encampment, and on the left, the Romans. The Romans have captured all of mainland Greece, except for Athens ,which i have just recieved word is currently under siege. Rhodes, Crete, and some greek cities on the coast of Asia Minor are the only greek areas, not under roman rule.A roman army of 16,000 was sent to Rhodes and landed at the field of Hermes but 2 days ago.A Greek army was gathered in Asia minor and sent to Rhodes. Our force numbers 11,500 men who are not as well trained as the Roman legionaries.I have under my command a force of 800 well-trained hoplites,600 militia hoplites, and 200 Cretan Archers. The commander of the force,Asaetos(asitos), has called for the war council already.I shall take a postion with my hoplites in the center spread out in 8 rows of 100, with my militia split in three,200 on each wing and 200 in the front, and then my archers split in two groups, one per wing behind the militia.i shall form the right end of the greek battle line.My northernmost men will be on a slope leading up to a small town called Persamus. The Romans are began to form their lines and now so must I.
In the center of our line will be the Hill of Hermes, which beholds the shrine.Jaetus has already well fortified that position. It seems that now the battle lines of both armies have been formed. The horns sound and we are ordered to march. To be continued.........
