The time has come for Athens to rise again. Decades of disrespect and forced servitude has awakened in us a martial vigor not seen since the days of Marathon, the Persian Wars and Pericles. It is time for Athens to reclaim Greece and bring our unrivaled Greek culture to the world!

Perfect timing for an Athenian AAR with 300: Rise of an Empire a few short months away
I say you should wipe out Pyrrhus and the Epirotes before building up your forces and overthrowing the Macedonian yoke. Grind the Antigonids into dust or drown them in the waters of the Aegean

Yeah, secure Macedonia asap, then worry about fiddly crete.
And I shall go Softly into the Night Taking my Dreams As will You
I dive right into the campaign by first reasearching Logistics. As a nation with a small military, a sound knowledge of logisitics will help us gain some kind of edge or parity with our early enemies. Plus, it will allow us to build a more advanced Barracks when we have the funds.
This hear is our miniscule starting army. Termed as 'Ares' Dread', these men are anything but. A large expansion and recruitment program shall need to take place to bring up its fighting strength and power.
I move our spy Canace towards Larissa. The defences look weak for now, but with barely an army to speak of, our chances at successfully storming the village are little. Some more preparation is needed.
Our army, Ares Dread led by our general Zenobios will be our main army for quite some time. I rename it ‘Sons of Athena’, and order is expansion with some Hoplites.
The army ‘Pericles’ Pride’ is ordered to bolster the forces of Zenobios.
A Traveller’s loge is begun in Athens to bolster income.
A Trade agreement is offered to Bithynia as they are the only peoples we know with a moderate chance of success.
It is rejected. Hopefully they shall come to an agreement with us soon.
The turn is ended.
Turn 2- 271BC
A Hellenistic Polis is ordered in Athens to improve the garrison and income. Athens will be vulnerable for several years yet and the slightly increased and proficient garrison will be valuable.
A Slinger is ordered for our army. It is all we have the money for at the moment.
With not much going on, we end the turn.
We are greeted with this offer from Egypt. Needing cash and happy for the treaty, we gratefully accept
Turn 3- 270BC
Logistics has been researched. The value of warm food in a soldiers belly cannot be understated before a battle is commenced.
Reasearch is begun on the possibility of organised supply for our troops. The main bonus here will be the -2% upkeep for all armies, which over the course of the campaign will save us thousands of coins.
More recruitment is ordered, with much more able to be ordered this turn.
Pyrrhus is defending Larissa. We need more troops to deal with him.
Using the last of our yearly funds, our once great navy is expanded.
The turn is ended.
Turn 4- 269BC
An alliance is forged between Sparta and Egypt. This could bode ill when we eliminate Sparta.
The last recruitment is ordered for the ‘Sons of Athena’. Next year they shall be ready for war. Although with no cavalry to speak of (except for the General's bodyguard), this army will be a match for early game Epirus. I am saving up for a expansion of the barracks in Athens to recruit some cavalry.
Our treasury is taking a hit with the recruitment and is struggling to cope. We shall need to make some conquests soon to alleviate it.
The turn is ended.
Turn 5- 268BC
Organised Supply is finished being researched. In order to get as much of a martial advantage over our rivals as possible, Tactical drills is ordered to be researched.
After many years of insults and servitude, Athens is now taking its first step to reclaim its glory. War is declared on Epirus. We shall take their territory and destroy their nation forever!
The Sons of Athena Advance into Epirus territory and attack the army of Pyrrhus.
He retreats but his army is tracked down and brought to battle.
Hopefully this shall be an easy battle.
We attack on a dry day, so our ranged superiority is unhampered. The battle itself was interesting. Pyrrhus boldly advanced and many of his troops and elephants were mown down by our slingers. Pyrrhus then charged our slingers and Zenobios countered with help from some Hoplites and Pyrrhus was killed indescriminately in the slaughter. It is said he took 3 of our noble cavalry with him before he died. SO perishes a worthy foe.
It is a Decisive victory! The captured are enslaved and will boost our economy.
Zenobios rised in rank and talent, and choses to increase his ability as a Warrior.
‘Sons of Athena’ is moved closer to Larissa.
With nothing else to do, I end the turn.
There ends my first five turns of our enterprise. Sadly it is not a interesting update but necessary to lay the foundation of our future Glory.
Ok, now i will try and update this as often as i can, so keep your eyes peeled. My aim is to finish this before the end of February.

Poor Pyrrhus
At least he went down like a boss rather than a tile to the head
Ok, Now it is time to give everyone a update, as part of my present to you for New Years! Hope you enjoy!
Turn 6- 267BC
AS we open the turn we are informed that an Epirus Spy has wreaked the baggage train of our ‘Sons of Athena’. This I particularly frustrating when we look at the defenses of Larissa
No army is situated in Larissa. The previous armies fled north for some reason, leaving a tantalizing prospect for conquest.
It also appears that Sparta is on the offensive, with an army bound to Apollonia. I pray to the gods that we beat them to an occupation of it.
Canace attempts to Coerce the enemy spy into our ranks, but the prospects are not terrific.
She was partially successful, and has hindered the enemy spy’s movement next turn.
Canace has increased in Rank and I chose to increase her Authority as it was her weakest skill.
An enemy fleet is discovered. They are the remains of Pyrrhus’ army. If they hope to catch Athens undefended they are unlucky.
Our fleet is moved to below Sparta in a journey to possibly help the capture of Apollonia after Larissa is captured.
I end the turn
Turn 7- 266BC
A plague is gripping an enemy army, we shall have to be careful to who we offer battle.
Our populace in Hellas grows more content. They should be with news of our victories bringing joy at home.
Larissa is once again undefended by Eporite armies.
Now is our chance- We attack! The garrison is small and unskilled. This shall be a ranged battle for the most part, useful in building the proficity of our slingers.
The enemy garrison has sallied and we shall decide the fate of Larissa in the field and not in the city.
My uninspired battle formation. After some missiles it was a morass, with a sneak attack on my general that I was almost not able to pull him out off.
Nevertheless, the battle ended in a decisive victory.
I occupy Larissa.
Our army is growing in fame and strength, and has risen in rank. Being made of hoplites, I order the spearmen to train to new levels of strength to match their status and am rewarded by a 5% bonus for weapon damage of all spear units.
Canace is ordered north to view the defenses of Apollonia and we are pleased with her report. These defenses are no match for our army and the Spartan army is nowhere in sight.
Our navy is moved north to be ready for our eventual strike on Apollonia.
We offer trade to Pontus
They accept. Evidently we needed some trade goods before people wanted to trade with us.
Bithynia also accepts our trade offer.
We end the turn
Turn 8- 265BC
Our research into tactical drills is successful. Now is time to help alleviate our money difficulties.
Research into Land Reclamation is ordered.
Epirus has tried to poison our wells in Athens. We cannot do anything with Canace watching Apollonia.
With the ‘Sons of Athena’ rested, they begin their match to Apollonia, which we hope will fall in the next year.
‘Pericles’ Pride’ is ordered north to fully secure Larissa, however this leaves Athens undefended. I hope Sparta do not capitalize on our vulnerability.
Enough money is finally saved for a Holsideros Barracks in Athens. Soon we will be able to build cavalry.
It appears the Epirus armies are concerned for the welfare of their last stronghold, and have moved more forces into the area to secure it. Hopefully we can divide some away from them and destroy their weak sections.
I move our fleet onto their trade lanes so they know where we are. We shall see if they risk moving away from their fortress.
Rome is encountered for the first time.
Sparta offeres us a Defensive Alliance.
I refuse.
I end the turn.
Turn 9- 264BC
We are asked to recruit a champion. I will as soon as I am able.
The enemy agent attempts to stall us again.
War is declared between Rome and Epirus. I must be quick before the Romans get a foothold in Greece.
In a ploy to help even the odds a little, Canace is ordered to poison the enemy wells, however she is unsuccessful but manages not to lose us money.
Although the defenses of Apollonia are formidable, I attack. As they say, Fortuna favors the bold.
Our numbers are about equal, and it shall be a day in the field.
I deploy my army with its backs to a hill. I managed to thin out the enemy ranks before they charged headlong into my phalanx. From there on, I surrounded and destroyed them.
It was a decisive victory.
I opt to release the captives. There were too many to keep my public order in check if I enslaved them.
Zenobios raises in rank again and I chose for him the skill of a commander.
Apollonia is besieged. The battle looks to be such a pushover I decide to Auto-resolve to save time.
And it is victory at a low cost. I occupy the fellow Greeks.
APOLLONIA IS OURS!!!!
After a few hard battles, our men need rest. The remaining armies of Epirus to the north shall be left alive for another year.
Our navy traps the remainder of Epirus’ Navy. They will also have a year to live.
After the conquest of middle Greece, our finances look a touch better. Now is time to consolidate before I take on our next enemy.
I end the turn
Turn 10- 263BC
Our civil research is complete, meaning a small boost in income.
We have our first event of our reign. I opt to expand the mines.
I opt for Land management to be researched.
We attack a remaining army of Epirus.
Again I Auto-resolve and we win a good victory.
Zenobios rises in the ranks again. This time I chose for him the skill of Virtue which will help with our public order problems for now.
I gain a trade agreement with the Ardiaei.
Finally we have the funds to recruit a champion. Antikles shall help train our troops to a decent level whilst they remain idle and no war is raging.
We attack the enemy fleet. It is successful.
We promote Zenobios within our party for his good work.
Ready to end the lives of the enemy fleet, we give battle.
It was a short battle and entailed our big ship hitting theirs.
However our fleet is also getting a reputation and we believe our men are Great Marksmen so get a bonus in shots per minute.
With Thessaly somewhat secure, we return ‘Pericles Pride’ to Athens to guard our capital of our growing Empire.
Soon we shall make all of GREECE OURS!!

Wonderful progress AE. Figures the Romans would decide to join in on the war with Epirus after you've done most of the work and all but destroyed their military forces
Good move setting up all those trade agreements as well. Don't know where you plan on moving on next, but if you're going to breakaway from Macedon soon it might be best if you get a few non-aggression pacts from the factions surrounding Greece. Ardiaei are small, but they can be a firm ally to safeguard your northern border and their undiscovered neighbors the Triballi may also help your cause (they're either neutral or slightly hostile now, but that'll change if you declare war on Macedon). Once Macedon is done with, I have a feeling that you'll go after Sparta and Knossos next since conquering them will bring all of Hellas under your control and give a good boost to your Imperium rating.

Nice account. I expect you'll be throwing off the shackles of the Macedonians soon enough, though be wary the Spartans do not join them as you refused their alliance. Smart move though, being you'll eventually want that settlement for yourself.
Can you see how Rome are faring against the Etruscans? Usually they struggle.
My apologies for the gap between updates- Real life has been hectic! Now for a not very exciting update..
The Lull in the Waves of War
Turn 11- 262BC
The Ardiaei offer us a non- aggression Pact. Gratefully, we accept.
It appears our choice in the event led to some peasant’s deaths. Unfortunate.
After chasing the remnants of the nation of Epirus- a small Spartan army has invaded our territory. With our army in Apollonia and us unprepared for war, we have to let this injustice pass.
Our barracks is completed in Athens, leading to us able to recruit some cavalry which shall be helpful in chasing down routers.
It appears that Eprius is now only a memory held by few.
I order Antikles to train with ‘Sons of Athena’ in order to boost their experience levels. My aim is for him to improve the whole army until just past the first experience level, then move on to my other armies.
A homestead is ordered in Larissa
Canace is moved down closer to Sparta. It shall be my next objective. By securing Sparta, I secure my rear and can therefor either have my showdown with Macedon or sweep on to Crete and finally have dominion over all of Hellas
I end my turn
Turn 12- 261BC
Canace reaches Sparta and discovers the formidable garrison. This will be a hard nut to crack, but they lack long range missile units such as my slingers- and hopefully I can exploit that fact…
I order a Hellenistic village to be built in Apollonia. The increased garrison and income is sorely needed with my army to be withdrawn soon…
War has been declared between Rome and Carthage. I am surprise they held it off for this long…
‘Pericles’ Pride’ is moved up into Thessaly and is on route to Apollonia to relieve the ‘Sons of Athena’ from Garrison duty and allow them to return home to Athens
I end the turn
Syracuse offers me a trade agreement.
I accept
Turn 13- 260BC
Land Management is complete, and with my armies about to increase in size, I order research into the possibility of Military Settlements
Antikles has levelled up in rank, so I level up his cunning as he is sorely deficient in that area.
‘Pericles’ Pride is moved closer to Apollonia
I expand Athens and order the establishment of some Consecrated ground.
I end the turn
Turn 14- 259BC
A Hellenistic Village is also ordered in Larissa.
‘Pericles’ Pride’ meets ‘Sons of Athena’ outside of Apollonia and hands of responsibility of the garrisoning of this vital town. Also transferred are the new cavalry units.
‘Sons of Athena begins it’s long journey home, now complete as an army.
These turns are relatively boring as I consolidate my growing empire, and prepare for war.
I end the turn
Pergamon offers a Trade agreement. I accept
Turn 15- 258BC
Antikles rises again in the ranks. This time in increase his authority
Uh-oh. This will make war in a few years a bit more difficult. I hope I can undertake a diplomatic offensive to bring them to my side.
‘Sons of Athena’ moves back into its home town, and reunite with family and friends. This visit is only temporary, as everybody knows, as the magistrates have become more and more sure of an impending war with Sparta.
A New army has been raised- ‘The Children of Zeus’. This army will be expanding and will hopefully become a conquering army of ‘Sons of Athena’ skill.
A few units are recruited. This army will be needed to conquer Sparta!
I end the turn
Next update will be along in a couple of days

Good to see you're taking the time to reinforce your armies and consolidate your position. In can be tempting to get caught up in the moment and try and conquer one of the minor powers like Knossos or the Ardiaei before another major faction can get their hands on their territory, but in doing so you risk overstretching your forces and alienating yourself from the surrounding factions who may become fearful and suspicious of a conquest-happy neighbor.
Concerning the Macedon-Ardiaei alliance, I'm going to paraphrase Machiavelli and say, "When faced with a weak enemy and a strong one, ally with the weaker and with his help destroy the latter. When the conflict is over, the stronger enemy will have been swept from the field, while the weaker one will lack the power to oppose you.". This is what I've been doing in my Lusitani campaign and so far it's working brilliantly.
Just be careful about attacking Sparta because if their relations with Macedon and Egypt are strong enough, then you'll risk having them and probably the Ardiaei come to their aid and opening a world of hurt on your rising kingdom.

Some lesser people may consider episodes where the only blood split is that of peasants in mine collapses as boring episodes, which only goes to reinforcing the idea we greater people have of their insignificance.
Episodes such as these detail the underlying strength and preparations needed to support the very enjoyable scenes of bloodshed and victory. I, for one, found this a fascinating and detailed transcipt of one's march to greatness.
So pelase do continue! And if anyone says otherwise, they immediately place themselves among those discussed in this first paragrapg, and thus may be safely ignored!

Bold move, turning on Sparta so early. What are their diplomatic relations like?
Also, to avoid war with the Ardiaei you can find a faction that is at war with Macedon and offer to join said war. This skips the "calling in allies" bit that conventional declarations do, although you'll still have a healthy cost to diplomatic relations due to "war/trespasses/etc against Madecon".

The End of our Ancient Enemy
Turn 16- 257BC
Pergamon offer us a Defensive Alliance, I somewhat reluctantly accept.
Our research into Military Settlements is finished. Research into Tax Labour is undertaken
With our armies prepared and growing stronger, it is time for Hellas to be under our control. However, the intricate set of alliances makes war with only just Sparta hard to achieve. However, Sparta are allied to Egypt, and are their only allies. Although it will cost me some trade income, war must occur. Therefor we declare war on Egypt. The plan has worked and they are joined by Sparta in war. However, we are now labeled as ‘Untrustworthy’.
‘Sons of Athena are placed in Ambush mode in front of Athens. Hopefully either the Spartans will attack, or will dilute their garrison enough for us to make a successful attack.
With war now upon us, I end the turn
Pergamon ask us to declare war on Sardes. We are too preoccupied and must unfortunately decline.
Turn 17- 256BC
It appears one of the Oligarchs have got themselves a promotion.
Our Hellenistic village is completed.
‘Sons of Athena’ advance slowly into the Peloponnese. We set another ambush.
Canace successfully manages to poison the provisions of the Spartan army Garrisoning Sparta. Hopefully this will help even the odds a little.
She therefore gains in rank.
The poisoning was quite successful.
With not much else to be done, I end the turn
Turn 18- 255BC
Our research into Tax Labour is successful, and Engineering is ordered.
Sparta have intercept some of our orders…
Hopeful of success, we order Canace to poison the enemy army again. However, she is unsuccessful.
I order ‘Sons of Athena’ onto the attack and they encircle Athens. Needing reinforcements, I order ‘The Children of Zeus’ to come to their aid. The Spartan army outside Sparta is driven off.
Without much else to do, I order an assault. SPARTA MUST BE TAKEN!!
It shall take place in Sparta. Many of our men are veterans, but we face the feared Spartans.
Hopefully my missile superiority will help me even the odds.
The Spartans barrackaded the main streets leading to the town centre. In order to avoid as many casualities amoung my infantry, my slingers are put to work whittling down the enemies numbers. They sit there and take it and rotate their units around so almost all are effected.
The carnage is pretty obvious. After a whittling down, my infantry stormed the barricades and put the wounded spartan infantry to flight and they were chased down by my cavalry. A tense moment came when my tired infantry neared the center of town and some hidden units surprised them whilst my attention was distracted., However, a quick flank by my cavalry and a general led to the resumption of the rout
VICTORY!!!
As you can see, my missile superiority came in very handy!
I occupy
‘Sons of Athena’ has rose in glory! I chose for them the tradition of Inexorable Conquerors, which will mean a bonus to melee and missile damage.
And in one year, Sparta is no more!
We have conqured the Statue of Zeus
After the defeat of Sparta, I ask for peace from Egypt.
Wisely, they accept.
‘The Children of Zeus’ are moved northwards, to take up garrison duties in Thessaly.
With a momentous turn completed, I end the turn.
Turn 19- 254 BC
Antikles is gaining a reputation for his efficient training of men.
I chose to upgrade Sparta to a Hellenistic Village.
‘The Children of Zeus’ continue to move north.
Our fleet is sent on a expedition to gauge the defenses of Crete.
Canace is also moved north to look at the defenses of our so called ‘masters’
I end the turn
Turn 20- 253 BC
Alas, Demochares, one of our generals has succomed to his age.
We place in command of Pericles’ Pride a noble called Carpophorus
The fleet arrives in Crete and checks out the defenses. Not too bad…
The fleet is ordered back to recruit some more ships so they can assist in taking control over what remains of Hellas.
With money needing to be saved, I end the turn.
Note: Very sorry about the total lack of updates for the past month. RL has been busy with me applying successfully for University, buying a car and preparing for a quick holiday in Sydney. Not to mention working 40-48 hour weeks..
