I've played germans VHard/VHard and I have to say spear warband is the killer, especially when compared to other barbarian nations' counterparts. It's like an advanced greek phalanx, contains 60 soldiers (harder to flank them, easier to stretch) and you can build them straight at the start of the game. You don't even have to use Screeching Women provided you have at decent general (like 3+ stars)behind their backs. I've had a few battles where enemies were outnumbering me 3:1 and the battles ended with casualty rating 20:1 in my favor.

Ahh, I gotta disagree. I know that the Scythians aren't normally playable, but using the mod that makes all factions playable I'm about 60 turns into their campaign. All I have to say is wow. I've already obliterated the Armenians, Dacians, and Germans. Thrace attacked me and now all of their greek landholdings are mine. The Brutii are in full retreat, and Britannia and Gaul are my protectorates. In battles, my horse archers are un-approachable. I've taken on armies close to 4,000 with an army of 1,500, and detroyed the entire army without losing a man. My empire stretches from the steppes to Spain. Those Amazons are a pain though.

i did 300 romans against 4000. i was insignificant on the map but iwon cos of my general and cavalry. i made a hole in the wall. broke their lines and made a break for the corner where there was no flank. i quickly defeated the enemy on that side and turned around to meet the other army hacking away at my infantry. then i hit them with the general and praetorian cavalry and withdrew. they came in the thousands. then finally there was about 1000 left at the plaza. i sent units round two sides to initiate the attack on the plaza who charged forwards to take the bait but stood their ground on one side cos they knew the trick, there were praetorians round the back. i engaged them and hammered them on all sides to find out i lost 10 praetorians and then another 5. after they were thinned out the cavalry came in and destroyed them. i notice how praetorian cavalry are effective in that they don't stop during a charge normally, they just keep going. i had praetorians and legionaries. it was a custom battle so i put in some peasants upgraded to near praetorian attack for a fairer battle and i filled up all the team slots. most of the army i fought was german. they put up a decent fight in all i had 17 casualties. i seen germans, they're not that bad, they have good attack, you just need to hold and keep up morale until you get their archers and better units
