So Emporer Jay, how could you use reinforcements effectively to take Rome?

On other forums I have noticed that many players advice against using generals in control of your reinforcements. from my experience you can win really great victories with another general moving in from behind the enemy. In one battle I had 20 units of medium strenght (archers, ves., aux and a mix of hastati, prins., and leg. cohort) up against a much stronger roman enemy attacking from two sides of a small hill. I held their main army on a distance with archers and ves. and sent a few units to hold against the other group. They then started the main attack on the hill and I could only hope to hold the line for a few minutes.
It was fantastic to see my reinforcements coming in behind their army and shower them with javelins before charging them with cavalry and leg. cohort. In seconds the battle had turned and I could use my remaining men to rout and kill the group behind me. In this case I would have lost big time if I just got reinforcements one by one. Their main army was crushed and I moved on to take their city.
