Hi all, I've already posted this before, but no use making a new one for the styles of attack that I do.
Anyway, as Carthage, I liked using the elephants for moral and shock purposes. Generally, I'd use Sacred Band Infantry, Sacred Band Cavalry, and Armoured Elephants. No missle unit of any kind, never, natta, no way. Not with Carthage.
Order of actions, or movements I suggest you make:1: Send left elephants far over to their left flank. Do the same with the right, but over to their right flank. HOLD
2: Move the rest of your army up. Facing the same way. As you get closer, spears facing them, charge your elephants in from the sides.
3: Hold your infantry for a moment, let elephants cause mayham.
4: Pause game. Pick a target for every single sacred band unit you have. Spears down.
5: Game still paused. Order left cav to run to their left flank, almost behind them. Do the same for the right cav. For their right side ofcourse.
6: Un-pause game. Select elephants, move them back. Not to you, but to their far far rear flank. Get em out of the way for routers later.
7: Their troops are scattered now, and you infantry is almost to their backs, sides, and some fronts. The fighting begins.
8: CHARGE THE CAV TO THEIR BACKS!
9: The rest you can figure out.

If Im playing as someone else, and I see elephants coming, I just hold all the lines, and focus all of my archer fire at them. If I have no archers, then I do my best with whatever phalanx troops I have. If I have none of those, then dogs or pigs. And if none of those, it shall be a very bloody fight to the death. Or a nice and quick retreat.
Hmmm, you asked a lot of questions.
Using archers, I LOVE! Ummmm, the sweet sound of hundreds of wizzing arrows followed by the startling sound of gurgling blood. I try to utilize archers completely. Most of the time I will have no less then 4 - 5 archer squads per army. Instead of always attacking an enemy, I usually try to provoke them into attacking me. As I play with phalanx factions mostly, I like to defend an area with 10 or more hoplites or phalanx's, backed up by 4-5-6 archer squads. The rest would be the General, Cavalry and Onagers! And I go from there!
But, all in all, when Im in a head on bash, my units of choice would be Spartan's, Mercenaries, General, and flanking Cav.
