Im playing with the Julii and have had a rich beggining. All my cities are providing me with possitive figures and, until now, I remain undefeated on land except for an ambush where 100 something straggler reserve forces were wiped out.
At the time I have under my command my initial two cities, segesta, Patavium, the other city right up north, Marb something, Masalia,Lugdublabla, and the other Gaul city to the west of france which I acquired a pair of turns ago.
The force I used to take that last city was fairly depleted so I decided to move forces from Masalia and the other city near spain (The Marb thing). However a huge force in comparison to my garrison there is near by the city ready to launch a siege. Fortunately the second army, commanded a 3 star general gaul family member I managed to bribe and has turned cloak. Yet, the huge near 1k force is still about and though I managed it to stall and put that turn cloak in command of my relief forces coming from masalia, Im having some troublesome difficulties dealing with those threatening gauls:
My roman general that won the city is but a two star and has in the garrison, 450 troops and is under siege so I cant increase my foothold there. The relief force is under the command of the turn cloak, who is nigh beside the city. His army though, is but the remainder of previous counter striking expeditions in the south of france and a hurried recuiting process in Masalia. So, that force is made up of nothing better than city guards and Hastati with some beaten up units of equites and barbarian mercenaries I hired on the way to blow up my numbers. All this adding up to 403 soldiers. The problem lies in the fact that I cant combine forces and the enemy army singles out one of my two forces, applying the well known strategy of divide and conquer. My opponent takes out the turn cloak first and then lays the town in siege and with the poor quality troops there, has his way with the city. If I could combine forces, mayhap I would beat him, but I am impeded. When I engage him in combat with either one of my generals, my supposed reinforcements under the other general, be he the turn cloak or the family member, are shown as possible helpers but in the fight itself a message appears telling me they wont arrive in time.
So, tell me, how does one go about beating a force of near a thousand gauls divided into a heavy cavalry unit and combined light and heavy infantry troop units, during the winter, utilizing an army of city guards, hastati, barb mercs, and a unit of velites that make up an army of 403 fighters?
