So I just randomnly tried this extremely cheap strategy with the Greeks at one point... anyway the opponnent outnumbered me 5 to one, it was on some kind of open field.
What you do is if you have hoplites have them all stand in a corner facing the enemy. That way the enemy has to engage you from the front -- nearly impossible to beat hoplites like that.
Suggestions?

Yes it works but its a noob tactic.
You'll get bored of it after a few battles.
Much more fun not to cheat.

If youve ever seen the moovie zulu they form a square to protect a town.
This is another tactic for hoplites as usually the AI has trouble sizing up where to hit and you can place your archers and cavalry in the center of the square.
Note: watch your flanks tho make sure each unit overlaps the over otherwise flank attacks will kill u so either have lots of hoplites or make a really tight square.

technically the square isnt a noob tactic, unlike the corner, this tactic was used by ancient armies in order to keep from being flanked, and can be countered by seige/archers or by focusing all your strenth on one side

I can't say I say that I see the fun in corner camping, much more fun to form a really long line, crunch into the enemy, and pray to the heavens it holds. I tried corner camping before, the only thing that helped win the battle was the fact that the enemy had ran 3/4 of the way so they were tired.

Alright so most people think noob box is well noobie lol
but fritz u can also try another tactic of mine which is depending on unit size form a line of about a 3 man deep phalanx and do the same for everyone of yourunits and pile them on top of each other (literally) because unlike just 1 unit on another those spikes will hold the advancin units and if u find urself being encircled select 1 just 1 of the units and order them to attack the flankin units
This may seem slightly crazy but if u hav a fair few units it shouldnt really be much of a bother
