Topic Subject: Seleucid confusion?
posted 18 August 2011 13:51 EDT (US)
As a Seleucid, creating lost of troops which I than used to take all nearby rebel settlements. Now instead of starting with 6 settlements, I have 13 settlements. The question is:

Who is a bigger threat.
Egypt
The Greek City States of Pergamon and Rhodes,
Armenia
or Parthia.

In my opinion, Egypt is least threatening.
I've been in games where Egypt is kept from attack the Seleucids by dozens of rebels rampaging their lands. They even have civil revolts in Sidon and Jerusalem.

However each game I play, I notice that Pontus and Armenia tear the Selecuid Empire into shreds, with a little help from Parthia.

I want to conquer the one that is the biggest threat first, and Pontus and Armenia are easy targets since they start so small. What do you think?

Depends on your skill in dealing with cavalry and horse archers. If you find these easy battles, go for Parthia and Armenia. If you find chariots or infantry easy, Pontus, Greeks, and Egypt are your foes.

I personally take out Egypt first, then Pontus, then Armenia and Parthia. Egypt gives the economy and horse units, as well as great infantry if they build that up. the other cities don't grow as fast, which is another reason why I let them be for a while. They grow and build up at their nations expense, and I simply take it when it's satisfactory.

Egypt is usually the biggest threat, but you can concentrate on Egypt a bit first, then see if you have enough power to take out Pontus. Armenia and Greece are usually quite neutral for a long time. Parthia can get annoying but they don't get too powerful very quickly.

When playing as the Seleucids I bee-line for Egypt and just hold the northern border until they're wiped out. Pontus/The Greek Cities are next to fall, followed by Armenia and Parthia. Then I take a break for a while, build stuff, train armies full of elite troops, and crush the Romans.

Broadly speaking, I usually make first for Egypt's Levantine cities, then deal with Pontus and Parthia, then the rest of Egypt, and Armenia last. But it's not really that simple because you're constantly at war with all of them. The Greek Cities definitely pose the lowest threat, especially if you take Pergamum on Turn 3. I am writing a new opening moves guide for the Seleucids which sets out what direction you should head in, and I was also thinking of doing an AAR but I don't think I have time now.

i would have to say that greece poses the biggest threat over time, if they start to mass produce armoured hoplites and spartans, no battle becomes "easy". though if you take egypt and get the economic boost from them, you should be able to take greece before they become too advanced. just my 2 cents.

Although the Seleucids are a phalanx power as well, with extremely powerful cavalry, so they can usually trounce the Greeks. Plus they've got legions, and as the Romans proved (and the game as well) legions beat phalanxes any day (even Spartans). And the Seleucids have access to Turkey, Rhodes, and Crete, so you can hire Cretan Archers to slaughter Spartans.

@General Sajaru

They also have Elephants. Nothing can stand in their way.

Except a human player. AI Vs AI or human Vs AI they might win, but against another human it wouldn't be so easy.

I don't get it... Is Urban Cohort stronger then Ligenary first cohort?

Yes, they are much better.

Since catas and ele can be recruited only from tier 4 and 5 you'll have to fight for quite some time with levy pikes and phalanx pikes assisted by some archers and light cav.
In my campaigns I turned most my attention to egypt, if left alone they can become very powerful and hard to beat.
Uniting Anatolia seems a good idea too, haven't really tried that approach. Would be nice if you could archieve that before facing Egypt.

And elephants are about the best urban killers in the game. They need a lot of babysitting though to do their job properly most of the time.

What???? Why then Leginary First and Early Cohort is recruited from Rome only??? I thirt that the eagle carring cohorts are the best!!! Was I wrong??

Legionary First Cohorts have twice the men as normal cohorts, and the Eagle with which to give it command status (general's bonus).

But the troops manning it are normal legionaries. Urbans and praetorians have much better stats, and are retrainable at any city with a Tier 5 barracks (Imperial palace for the praetorians).

First Cohorts can only be retrained in Rome. Sucks if they lose some men out in the sands of the Levant...

They are best used to improve morale, and should not really join the fight unless they have to.

Don't they have like 120 to 80, 1/2 times more troops?

and you spelled normal wrong.

I really have nothing to say at this point.
Other than this.
