while playing a campaign yesterday i was thinking, is it better when facing an enemy that has missile troops while you have none, to split your forces into two?? i usually use germania and was thinking would it be better to split my forces into two equal units that attack each side of my enemy or is it better to stay as one unit to avoid any possible threat of flanking? any thoughts on this?

i have yet to try it because i generally dont like to micro manage during a battle and i assume this would require atleast a little micromanagement.

Depends on the missile troops you are talking about, as well as the quantity. If they are skirmishers like peltasts and such, I simply have my cavalry (always abundant in my armies) to simply destroy them. Archers are dealt with the same way. Now if the enemy has say 3+ archers and a healthy addition of heavy infantry/cavalry, I simply fight out the battle. They'll cause minimal casualties normally, as long as you keep your men moving to battle and not sit and wait for their quivers to run out.

For you, just fight out the battle. If they are only skirmisher troops (like Egypt and Numidia like to use) you need to change your army to fit the needs of battle. Every battle is different, and different factions need to dealt with differently.

Another thing worth mentioning is in an archer duel if your out numbered and the enemy has better quality stick your forces in the forest. Your archers wont get pounded so badly
