The Gladiators

In 73BC the slaves from a a gladiatorial school near Capua revolted against their masters and defeated the schools guards. In their escape they encountered a wagon full of weapons used by gladiators that allowed them to defeat the garrison of Capua that was sent against them as soon as the authorities there heard about the rebellion.

With the news of this first success many other gladiators from Capua, that was famous by its gladiatorial schools, as well as other slaves from the neighbouring towns, joined the rebellious slaves in the hills of Mount Vesuvius, to where they had retreated.

Their leader is Spartacus a thracian soldier that deserted from a auxiliary force of the roman army, was captured, sold as a slave, and then made a gladiator due to his strength.
His experience in the ways of war, his intelligence and resourcefullness, allied with the disdainful way the Romans have faced this revolt, have given Spartacus and his people the time to prepare to meet the enemy.

There is going to need to be a lot of poor quality troops when the campaign starts if you want to be historically accurate seeing most of the army was made of freed slaves, although you could make a unit made up of experienced troops captured from foreign lands after being defeated by the romans.

Vampiric Canniba, I don't think I will include a unit like that in the Gladiator roster, but they will be available as mercenaries. Mercenaries will play a very important role in the game, filling the gapes each faction has. They will be numerous and will have much better quality that those of vanilla.

Actually, Ancient Zoro, the ancient writers describe that the Spartacus army was very well trained in a very short time! Spartacus and other men with military experience trained a small group, then those trained another small group, and so on, until pretty much everyone has received some training and military equipment stolen from the romans. Pretty clever, right?

Well your modelling skill is superb neo. Love the Mirmillo.

Still miss a shield for the samnite glad, it seems somewhat naked; good for the arena but bad for the battleground where there is a lot of arrows and pylums in the air....

As far as i know, the main problem of SPartacus was not training but discipline. And not discipline in the battlefield: more in the sense that his troops easily feell to looting and pillaging activities.

All factions need a cavalry unit and gladiators did actually have to fight with or against chariots so why the hell wouldn't they use them??? Doesn't change the fact that they didn't actually use them but still. And the gladiators weren't as well trained as the roman legions, that's kind of what I was getting at.

If only, Anarchasis... I don't consider myself a real modeller. I almost don't do any original work, only take pieces from here and there and assemble them together but thank you nonetheless.

Well, Edorix. It's well documented that gladiators used chariots, as well as mounted gladiators, though not in that fashion. They were more like Cataphracts. But horses were not uncommon in Italy, so the gladiators could easily created a small mounted unit, used for screening and running down routers.
The chariots will give the gladiators a good advantage when they're being played by the AI, since the chariots are somewhat unbalanced when its auto-resolved. I don't want the gladiators to be easily defeated. As I always say, I will have historical accuracy in mind, but I'm willing to sacrifice it a bit for playability.

Also, those shieldless gladiators will probabily have shields!
Probably, but between "poor quality troops" and "as well trained as the ROman Legions" falls virtually all the armies of antiquity.
True. Roman infantry was indeed the top notch of infantry at that time. The "standard" I will use when giving units it's final stats will be pretty much peasant to legionary.

What will the main objective of campaign be?Because I saw at television a documentary talking about Spartacus. In the beginning, his objective was to flee in Gaul and start a new life away from Rome, where he would be free. However, his gladiators allies thought best way to survive was to walk on Rome and take it, encouraged by a victory where Spartacus ambushed Romans sent to capture him. Unfortunatly, Spartacus got carried away by his troops and decided to walk on Rome, then got surrounded, had flee toward coast of Italy, then got surrounded and had to try to fight his way out, but lost. So in fact, his real objective was to reach Gaul to escape Rome. I know you don't want to sacrifice gameplay to historical precision but you could add maybe another way to win by reaching Gaul and maybe surviving there for X years.

As far as I know what you say about the "objective" of the men participating in the revolution is true. Gladiators and slaves came from many differente places; Gaul, Thrace, Iberia, Greece, Italy itself, etc. My idea is to establish as an objective the conquest of Italy, Sicily, Sardinia, and at least one city in Gaul and another in Thrace and hold them for some time.

DUnno if it has to be gaul, simply getting enough place to in live was the objective "in mind" but it is also true that Spartacus did not planned to "conquer" gaul or enter in war with the celts, simply establish there...

You plan to give Gladiators the "horde" ability, Neo? It will be pretty appropiate i think

I'm going to refine my earlier idea. What about a gladiator warband? 40 or 60 or something on normal size, light armour, light weaponry, maybe a warcry? It would presumably represent the slaves that weren't gladiators to begin with, and therefore weren't specialist soldiers as such, more like generic Sparticii. (good name, methinks)

Yes, Vampiric. 250 entries on DMB and 500 on EDU, as it seems.

It's an idea, Zoro. I'm pretty sure that pretty much every western faction will declare war on the gladiators sooner or later, if they survive. Its how the game works.

I think this is onto something, while initially the gladiators may only have had thier own weapons and limited armor I would assume that they would have quickly picked up supplies from roman towns.

Prehaps a way to model this is a building/blacksmith that would upgrade thier armor when they took a town?

I think what Roman Warlord was thinking is that a unit of gladiators could somehow be transformed into another that looked like more regular troops through re-training.
Am I right, Roman Warlord? If not, please correct me

Also, check out the new gladiators. New version of the Hoplomachus to substitute the Gladiator Hoplite and a Secutor.
After the Thracian, that is already in the forge, and perhaps a Bestiarii (animal handler), I think the Gladiator's units will be complete.

The Hoplamachus looks very good.

Re-reading Roman Warlord's comment, I can think of one possibility. You could use a campaign script so that when the gladiator horde sacks a city, they gain a couple of new units, with more regular equipment. Something like Roman legionaries, but without the pila, morale, discipline or testudo ability.

I don't if that is possible via scripting, but it seems viable.

I think it would be possible, but it'd be a lot of work. First, using a campaign script isn't really an option as it means you can't save the game. You can however use a show_me script (the type that's also used for the advisor show me function) as a background script. There are some mods that use this, for example EB. Downside is the player has to activate it each time he starts a new game or loads a save.
