Was anyone following the case of Ian Tomlinson, who died of a heart attack after getting caught up in the protests while walking home from work?
The initial police statement simply stated that he suffered a heart attack and that missiles were thrown while they tried to help him. What they didn't mention was that he had aprevious encounter, where he was pushed to the ground from behind while he had his hands in his pockets. He clearly wasn't being 100% cooperative but neither was he violent or being uncooperative.
It wouldn't be the first time that the London police have tried to cover up their faults (remember the stories of Menzies "running away"?) but their story has changed dramatically over the last week.
Eye-witness reports say that Tomlinson was clearly trying to get home but was blocked by more than one police blockade. At the blockade in the video, he had allegedly already been tackled to the ground before (in the video) he was forced away, hit across the legs and then finally pushed down to the ground.
Personally I think this is common assault with bodily harm on a member of the public who was unlucky enough to get caught up in the protests and got frustrated with being herded away from his destination.
Was this force justified? Certainly not.
Should the charge be manslaughter? I don't think so.
Your thoughts?
