Yea I think if you do a new map you should try to quantify as much of the information as possible to try and clarify and doubts in the effects of actions. Perhaps a standardized list of numbers too so that there are no objections in how much player X should have. perhaps have a master file of information of what is globally known in the game.
Topic wise how about some form of civil war? say the Normandy invasion, war of the roses, a french battle for the crown, or the warring states period in China? This sets some groundwork by having a clear goal (stabilize the region). while giving multiple paths to victory. say uniting enough support to diplomatically become king or inviting family ties from outside the realm to support your claim. It would be kind of like the Game of thrones idea but with a history to draw upon.

An event where everyone knows only a little about might be ideal so someone who is well read on the topic will not have that much of an advantage at the start while everyone else is figuring out the time period.

how about like the reformation era? although the information on the period might be iffy.

Sounds fun, I'm in.
A DnD type game might be cool too, but that'll require a ton of meta work.
