Topic Subject: New TW Announcement?
posted 27 March 2013 17:27 EDT (US)
I saw a tweet by a chap at CA posted on Reddit saying that a new Total War, nothing like anything that's been done, was being announced tomorrow.

Just another rumour or what?

Link?

General Rawlinson- This is most unsatisfactory. Where are the Sherwood Foresters? Where are the East Lancashires on the right?

Brigadier-General Oxley- They are lying out in No Man's Land, sir. And most of them will never stand again.

Probably the newest Total War Battles or whatever the mini TW was called.

My bet's on using the Warhammer license.

I'd be all for using the Warhammer license. I would guess whatever it is it'll be for consoles.

It appears our hopes for a Total War: Warhammer will remain just that for now.
Hey all,

While this may need its own forum section in time, here is the annoucement from GDC:

"During his session at GDC 2013 in San Francisco today, Lead Designer James Russell revealed a brand new title under development at the UK studio.

Total War: ARENA will be CA’s first title in a F2P model, representing over a decade of strategy gaming expertise and a new spin-off for the Total War series. Offering players the chance to pitch history’s greatest commanders and their armies against each other in massive team-based battles, ARENA will focus entirely on online multiplayer, mixing elements of RTS and MOBA gameplay.

CA is looking for gamers to help craft their vision of a detailed, deep, multiplayer tactical experience. For more details on forthcoming Closed Beta Tests, sign-up at www.totalwar.com/arena."

The page link in the quote seems to be down for now. Probably because of a heavy amount of inbound traffic.

Damnit, here I thought I was going to get it here first...

I'm eager to see what they come up with. Seems like they're going to make it like a Total War Online Multi-player kinda game, wonder what this will do to the Total War game multiplayer, if I'm interpreting this right.

Could make for some amusement. It won't be a serious money spinner though, will it?

Free to play, so I'm guessing in game ads, as well as buying in game stuff (if able to) and other gaming perks no doubt.

Here's a fixed link to the sign up page: http://www.totalwar.com/en_us/arena

I registered since it sounds like it could be fun and CA has never truly disappointed me. They wouldn't go into specific details yet, but there's speculation that we'll be able to match up not only Ancient World commanders but also Napoleonic commanders well. Perhaps it'll even cover the time periods of every Total War game released so which means we'll be able to see fantastic bouts like Gaius Julius Caesar vs Uesugi Kenshin.

Bit more news located at Polygon who got some words at GDC from James Russel and saw some of the game in action. While RPS also has some coverage of the game, and make it sound more appealing.

I shall keep an eye on it, but so far personally I've never really gotten that interested in the MOBA side of things. I hope they are not reliant on attracting the DOTA2 or LoL crowd in order for the project to be financially viable however. People usually only dedicate themselves to one MOBA game due to the level of dedication and practice needed to become good at one of them.

It might be more fun in action then hearing about it however with a lot of MOBA comparisons currently flying around, the RPS article certainly does put it in a better light for MOBA dislikers. Though I do not know how much faith I put in Creative Assembly to be able to balance Total War: Arena when they couldn't even balance Shogun 2's multiplayer as they added in more and more units through DLC and Expansions. So good luck to them if they want to mix vastly different eras, such as Antiquity with Napoleonic.
