Topic Subject: Thrace: The Serpent Reborn
posted 18 October 2008 19:14 EDT (US)
As I threatened in the ATW forum, I have released my Thracian Makeover as a separate mod. TtSR gives Thrace a much-needed overhaul.

For starters, Thrace: The Serpent Reborn is for vanilla Rome Total War version 1.5. It uses mod:switch, so it will not alter your original game files.

Thrace has several new units, and old ones that have been changed:

Thracian Peltasts

Thracian Infantry

Bastarnae

Thracian Noble Cavalry

I have removed the generic Peltasts and Falxmen. The first was unnecessary, and the second was done to make Thrace more distinctive from Dacia.

Thrace's new military tree is this:

Infantry
Tier 1 - Militia Hoplites
Tier 2 - Thracian Infantry
Tier 3 - Phalanx Pikemen
Tier 4 - Bastarnae

Missiles
Tier 2 - Thracian Peltasts
Tier 3 - Archers
Tier 4 - Onagers

Cavalry
Tier 2 - Militia Cavalry
Tier 3 - Greek Cavalry
Tier 4 - Thracian Noble Cavalry

In addition, the Early General's Bodygyard is now a lance-armed version of the Noble Cavalry. Also included are mercenary and rebel versions of the Thracian Peltasts, Thracian Infantry, and Bastarnae (the latter being merc only).

Furthermore, Thrace now has a total of four temples:

Dionysos - God of Wine - temple_of_fun
Bendis - Goddess of Hunting - temple_of_hunting2
Kotys - War Goddess - temple_of_battle
Sabazios/Heros - Hero God - temple_of_justice

Dionysos stays the same, but has a higher happiness bonus. Ares is now replaced by Kotys, and has a much more significant bonus than before (an experience as well as morale bonus). Dacia also has this temple btw. Bendis has the same stats as the Artemis temple. Sabazios is your basic law temple.

Naturally, new temples mean new priest and priestess ancillaries to go with them. Also included is the Head of Orpheus legendary artifact from ATW.

A few other factions receive changes as well, due to the overlap of some of their code. Dacia's temple of Bendis is now one of hunting, as Thrace's. The other Greek factions now have new skins for their Early and Late Bodyguard units.

Enough yakking. Download it here, and start carving up the opposition with a nice, shiny rhomphaia.

One question. Would this file also give every other barbarian faction a fourth development tier? If not I think that would be a good addition since Thrace now has a fouth tier.

The serpent shall rise from the ashes! Or perhaps that was the phoenix...

One minor problem (With the OP, not the files!):
Tier 2 - Falxmen
Afraid not.

Erzin: Thrace is (According to RTW) Hellenic, not barbarian. They have always had 4 tiers.

Like Andalus said, Thrace is a Greek faction, so it has always had a fourth tier. Giving the barbarians a fourth tier in TtSR was far beyond the scope of my intentions.
Afraid not.
Oops, that was from an early writeup of the unit tree. You missed the Chosen Falxmen though. Fixed now.

Now that Thrace is finished, I have started yet another Thracian campaign (my third now) in ATW, and I am very happy with how they are working out. The Thracian Infantry are proving to be even more potent than I had imagined. They are rock-solid. In fact, they can go toe-to-toe with hastati. Just be sure to get that warcry in before you charge.

Really? I always thought Thrace was a Greek culture with a Barbarian tech tree.

Hi SubRosa i think i encountered a bug in your thrace mod. Like during the first and second turn(s) in the game, i received command from the roman senate. It's kinda weird, but i dont think its going to be a problem =)

I thought you'd left them in.

I found it too, and the cause. It is from my moving Thrace to the beginning of the faction selection menu. Apparently that makes the Roman Senate think they are a Roman faction, when obviously they are not. Moving them down after the Romans fixed that.

Naturally that was the last thing I did, and so I did not do any testing beyond the first turn to get rid of all the unrest you get in many cities when you move factions around in descr_sm_factions.txt.

I replaced the download with 1.2, which is the fixed version. So just re-download it.

Nicely done SubRosa. Newsied on the front page. Do you want to add any pictures for it to the ATW gallery? Or even a separate gallery?

I may eventually add some pics of the Thracians to the ATW gallery. Probably when I make a faction preview of them. But that will probably not be for quite a while. I have bigger fish to fry right now, like hordes and emergent rebel factions.
