Topic Subject: Guide to changing a faction in RTW

Hi All
I am an old veteran of RTW and have modest modding capabilities that I have used in the past to make alterations in the game. I have tried most of the mods available
I wish to modify the vanilla to my own taste e.g by replacing Brutii with Epirus.
However there is no guide available that takes one step by step into the process. I have changed all the files some 16/17 to ensure replacement but something is not very right because the mod seizes at the loading screen at "unexpected error has caused RTW-Alex to stop". -show err switch doesn't help with this.
I wonder if there is a guide you are aware of to introducing new faction by replacing old in a step by step fashion that I may meticulously follow and give it another go.

I am totally unfamiliar with modding Alexander (v 1.8), so I don't know how much help I can offer if it is radically different from 1.5 or 1.6.

If it is similar, you can visit our Modding Tutorials or our Single Player Campaign Modding pages.

Maybe something there can help you out?

I have already read all the tutorial; started modding thereafter. None of them are about converting an old faction to new. It is Rome TW, I am trying to add a new faction in, not Alexander expansion. Only Alex.exe is used to start the mod

There are a total of 30 factions in RTW. The system is hardcoded to not allow more than 30 factions.

This means you will have to convert, as you doubtless already know, one of the existing ones to the one you want. The old one will no longer exist, making room for the new one, so to speak.

First you will have to rename a faction. This article can tell you how to do that. There are a lot of files to edit. Make back-up copies of everything before you do anything!

Then you will have to design a new faction symbol. This can help you learn to do that.

Then you will have to develop the new units. This page deals with the creation of units and the unit cards and ancillaries and the other stuff.

You will need to edit the export_descr_building to be able to have the new faction recruit the new units, or any units for that matter.

This page lists articles that also might be helpful.

There are a lot of files to edit, and any error may cause a Crash to Desktop. So be careful, make back-ups before you start, back-up what you modify often, and be precise.

Thank you Terikel Grayhair! I will try here to transform the romans_scipii faction into the Kingdom Pergamum and see if it works ...
