Topic Subject: MTW CTD possible solution
posted 09 June 2006 08:43 EDT (US)
having had the problem of MTW crashing randomly after installing RTW i suspected that something in the installation of one interefered with the other.

however wandering through forums elsewhere it seems the problem may be with anti-aliasing.

i turned it off in RTW so that i could get screen grabs.

However, it seems that MTW needs x2 anti-aliasing to work properly.

can't guarantee this will solve all problems but will report back to see if it has solved my problem.

(even curioser - VI works fine but MTW crashes.)

UPDATE: well with my nVidia fx5200 you need anti-alaising to be application controlled to get the program to load, fixing it at x2 stops it loading.

and even then the program suffers from random crashing.

only other suggestion is rolling back the graphics driver to something about three yeras old. not really an option, so MTW has been uninstalled for good.

UPDATE 2:

rolled back driver to 66.93 - problem same as before, game plays for about an hour (or even less) then crashes. autosave crashes on completing loading.

AND FINALLY:

downloaded 61.77 driver from nVidia and installed it. Hurrah! prog finally works without crashing. so if you have an oldish nVidia card and MTW keeps crashing try the 61.77 driver.

this is so annoying - i used to be able to play this on this machine, and now it refuses. just wish i could remember what i did to get it working!!
unless anyone has any other ideas?

Stickied because anybody playing the game on a modern computer is almost certain to get the CTD.

Do you mean on windows vista?

Not just Vista, though it probably happens there as well. I kept getting the problem on my XP box. Thanks for the tip! Is there any way around it with modern hardware?

Are we talking about the CTD when one presses 'Esc' to go to the menu?

In which case, I have no idea. I just make sure I svae pretty much every turn to avoid it.

It's a random crash I believe and the solution is "rolling back" your graphics card drivers, which is an extreme solution but if you want to play MTW1, it's what has to be done.

I have a problem, I am able to start MTW but every time I start a campaign it CTDs, help?

I feel the same way I did after playing Stronghold 2 for about 15 minutes, like it was my birthday and all my friends had wheeled a giant birthday cake into the room, and I was filled with hopes dreams and desires when suddenly out of the cake pops out not a beautiful buxom maid, but a cranky old hobo that just shanks me then takes $60 dollars out of my pocket and walks away saying "deal, with it".

The crash mentioned in the OP is a random one. It sounds like yours is different. Did you do any mods to files? Might be best to un-install and then re-install.

no mods, just patch 1.1

It does sound like a messed up install. Copy your saved games to a safe location, un-install and then do a fresh install. Make sure the game works before installing any patch. Then install the patch.

I kept getting crashes trying to start any new campaign, but switching it to 800x600 campaign map resolution fixed it. No need to roll back drivers.

I try to make it 800x600 but it's greyed out.

How is it greyed out? The option is set by a slider. Actually never mind. Other people seem have their resolution limited as well. Odd.

Anyway, it turns out the game still crashed for me when loading a big battle, plus the loading times were horrid. So I tried the rollback to 61.77 or whatever it was...but it was too old to work on my card. So then I updated to the newest driver (178.13) and set all resolutions to 1280x1024. Now it works perfectly

I suggest to anyone with an Nvidia card having MTW problems to get the latest driver. If that fails, mess around with resolution settings.

That's ZBrisk, baby!

Graphics card, not processor.

To see what graphics card you have:
Start -> Run -> dxdiag -> Display

Chances are, your device name will either have "NVIDIA" or "ATI" in it.

It says Intel GMA3100, that is in device section.
In the other section it says version 6.14.0010.blah blah

Yikes. That's an integrated GPU. You might want to get a dedicated graphics card...and not just for MTW.

ZBrisk is right Stormer. The integrated graphics card basically poaches your RAM to use for graphics. You should really look at getting a dedicated graphics card if you want to play anything other than the oldest games.

I also have the CTD problem on entering the campaign map. Once I got in a full turn under standard conditions (800x600 32-bit color). But mostly it is instant death.

I used to play MTW on this machine with a Geforce 2, now have a Geforce 6200 with 6.14.11.6921 drivers.

Just re-installed on my XP machine, running at the lowest rez seems to alleviate the problem somewhat.
