After beating both the historical battles and the main campaign I really have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed Alexander. The historical battles were the most fun I have ever had playing TW games. Another thing that I really like was the skins on the units. If you haven't taken a good look at some of the units in this game take a look at the Immortals, persian slingers, or companions... they're all fantastic. Great job to CA on the second expansion for RTW.

I have to say I wasn't very enthousiastic about Alexander until now, but you seem to have enjoyed it quite a lot. Hmmm... maybe I'll buy it.

It is a fun campaign, but only once. You can only play one faction in Campaign (without modding), and I doubt doing the latter would be fun as the other factions are quite over-powered. The way the map is made you are basically funneled down certain paths, so there is no re-playability to it. No one plays multiplayer either, so do not get it for that.

On the other hand some mods are using the executable now, among them XGM and LOTOR:TW. It does have more improvements from a modding standpoint, like unique and immortal generals, mercenaries can be made to be recruitable by only specific factions, and some other things.

I liked it. It was very challenging. The battles are epic in proportion. But after playing it once I have never even considered going back to it. But since mods are using it there is still reason to have it afterward. Some of the skins are good. The Immortals are outstanding. On the other hand some are just copied from RTW, and some honestly look rather weak.

I wanted a challenge and modded descr_strat to play as the barbarians, namely Dahae, to see what I could conquer before Alexander did. It was an enjoyable campaign, and since me and the Persians were, army-wise, more or less evenly matched, it was something of an adrenaline rush.

I ended up conquering the entire eastern half of the map besides India, and facing off against a handful of Macedonian armies.

The bridge battles and plains battles, as well as trying to outsmart your enemy in the mountains and passes of the east, was fun and challenging. Same as the whole game.

But I only replayed it to play as the other barbarians in different parts of the world for a different campaign game.

The nice thing is that whereas BI can sometimes feel a bit like just playing a mod, Alexander is a whole new feel.
I doubt doing the latter would be fun as the other factions are quite over-powered.
I have tried Persia, and it is not as easy as you might imagine. The main trouble is huge debt early on, unrest in a large number of cities, and large armies in the wrong places. The barbarians are quite fun though.

I preferred the historical battles to the campaign. Once you get to about Issus (In campaign) I find it gets too easy, straightforward or dull. Certainly once you've taken Babylon.
