How do you win a wall fight against a competent (sp? I can't spell for ****) opponent? I see no good wall units save for the legionaires. Their problem is that they are inferior to roman cohorts anywhere near their level and you need max barracks upgrade to produce them. Their other infantry units, all phalanxes, aren't very effective at all on walls. What do you do? I can't use my awsome cav (cataphracts and companions) without winning on the walls to get into the city. I hate lugging onagers around, even if tghat is an option.......suggestions?

Well, you can use Silver Shield Legions (i think that's what they are called). They are sword units.

Use sap points.

ahhhh, I have finished two imperial campaigns, and two half campaigns, but I have yet to even attempt sapping. Thanks I totally and completely forgot about that option.

Sap points are inherently dangerous though, so you'll want to purposely use a low-end unit for sapping.

peasents are great suicide units and men increases for siege equipment

Now the only thing I'll have to worry about is their possible (indeed probable) missile superiority. That's better than dealing with the lack of a good'available infantry unit for the walls though. I need to find some more cretens.......

A big problem of sapping is that you will get pelted really badly by towers as you enter the city.

Whats the danger of sap points? I use them quite often and nothing went wrong...

The enemy can destroy your sap points, killing everyone inside, and while your men line up outside to enter the tunnel, arrow fire can thin their ranks majorly.

So let crappy units, like mercenary peltasts or libyan mercenaries to do the sap. I know they're supposed to be more dangerous, but in the game it simply means the enemy has to scramble all its infantry off the walls, giving you ample time to completely deploy within the city. Either way defending towers will be shooting at you the whole time, it just means you bypass those costly wall battles.

Illyrians, crappy?

I use 2 seige towers and 2 ladders to take walled units out. eg.

=======================/-\==================================
=======================\-/==================================
Ladder..........tower.................................tower..........................ladder
.....................................................^..........................................
.................................................Ram..................................

I also use archers on the ladders (you have to put them far enough along so they aren't getting attacked) Them hoplites through the gate while my 2 seige towers put my best non spear troops onto the wall next to the gate to try and take the gatehouse and open it.

mercenary peltast are not Illyrians

I just don't see a win/win situation for attacking stone walls as Seleucia. The sap points and simply taking tower fire is the best bet ATM though....assuming it's only an ordinary stone wall anyway.......
