Due to the Seleucids WIDE range of units that leaves a significant margin of strategy. What I do is use 4-7 silver shield legionairres with 2 silver shield pikes each on the flanks(for a total of four pike cohorts). THEN I use 3 cataphracts, 3 companions, 2 armoured elephants, and 2 scythed chariots. This leaves a STRONG army with stable infantry and an even mightier cavalry. Only archers are lacking.

Yes the Seleucids have a very good unit selction. What they are missing in campaign is early units. Mostly an acceptable light cavalry and sword infantry. (or non phalanx) If you get them to the point of elephants, cataphracts, companions, and silver shield pikemen/legionaires you can field one formideable force. They aren't perfect though, as well nobody should be. Rome's legions are better than yours. You have no elite archer, or even close. Better recruit creten mercenaries if you plan to use archers much.

Sigh...SP is NO way to judge units. How bout MP. Tell me spartans are better than silver shields when for every time when my silvers go against spartans i lost 1 shield cohort for 4 spartans. Any ass can beat the AI. Hell you could B slap urbans with iberian infantry when playing vs. AI.

What's so bad about the AI? It's a simple unit vs. unit test. Tell me exactly what the AI does wrong in sending a single command (attack) in a unit vs. unit test. My whole arguement was *only* about the fact that the Seleucid Silver Shields are not better overall phalanxes than Spartan Hoplites. What better way to test this than a head-on confrontation between the two units? Multiplayer is irreleveant and cannot be backed upon to justify an arguement of what unit is simply better than another in a single function. The reason being that there are many factors affecting confrontations in multiplayer games, which don't entirely have to do with the units' direct abilities. These factors could be morale, terrain, position of soldiers, mode of attack, and unit numbers. For a certain strategy, the Seleucids might perform better than the Spartans, I'm not arguing against that. My arguement was solely about the fact that Spartans are better phalanxes than Seleucid Silver Shield Pikemen. Now, you can tell me why the AI is so terrible in a unit vs. unit test and I'll either yield if I have no relevant rebuttal or argue against it if I had one.

Single Player give you a pretty good idea what the diff factions are capable of, and their unit's abilities. Especially if all you have is one unit going head on at another unit. Besides, if you want to argue about which faction is the best MULTIPLAYER to choose isn't tehre a forum for multiplayer discussion??

BTW: I too had armoured hoplites eat my silver shield pikeman alive.

i like to use a combination of all the phalanxes the selucids have the legionares and 2 units of archers, plus usually generals, but i kicked egypts arse with that strategy on m/m, it was beautiful.
