Okay, now with those common misconceptions cleared, we can talk about how to use them properly. Elephants are very costly and can only be recruited from cities with the elephants nearby (showed on campeign map). They can only be recruited by some of the finest stables in late game, and they take 2 turns to recruit as well. That is why it is essential that they are used at their fullest. Here are 3 strategies on how to use the beast: Okay, I hope those can be of some help to you guys. Just remember, elephants are vurnerable to fire-arrows, incindarary pigs, and skirmishers. Besides that, you should do fine. I hope this is good enough for all. Question? Comments? [This message has been edited by AFF92 (edited 08-29-2006 @ 10:46 PM).]

If you have Rome:Total War, you have probably been delighted to see that the elephant is a unit in the game. These beast can do tons of damage and can trample man and horse alike, but they need to be used correctly, just like any other unit. To start off, here are some common mistakes about elephants in gameplay:
a) This is totally false, elephants excel at killing horses, and should be used liberally against the General's Bodyguards and other strong cavalry.
a) Elephants do have alot of damage when charging, but they also are great while they hold still and just battle the enemy with tusk and trunk. Also, a constantly charging elephant is a tired elephant
a) Yes, a good band of phalanx will route your elephant with ease. However, some of the weaker phalanx (Levy Pikemen, any Egyptian phalanx units, militia hoplites, hoplites, etc.) will be smashed easily, though you may take some casulties.
