i want your opinions on the best unit in rome-total war

i think that the best unit is the greek cities spartan hoplite.

Anyways, I like the Cretian archer. It just feels so productive to have half or so of their units die before they reach my lines (In MP, I use a LOT of archers in a phalanx line...at times)

Carthaginian Sacred Band Infantry kick so much ass. It's between the Sacred Band Infantry and Cataphracts for me.

I would say scorpion and Legion First Cohort in MP. Legionary cohorts in SP - 1 turn production and versatile.

Scorpions are more accurate than Onagers/Heavy Onagers and they fire at Very Long Range and deal multiple casualties. Legion First is good as it boost the capabilities of the units around it(usually Urban Cohorts).

I don't know all yet, but for the moment I just prefer cavalary (any ones), just because they do lots of casualties when the enemy try to run.

striking from behind, multiple times, there are hardly any survivers.

Except for defending a settlement, I hardly need to use more then archers and cavalary.

at least for the moment

You just gotta love Chosen/Cretan/Pharaoh Archers, They easilly take out anything.

Urban cohorts and Preatorian Cav are awesome too.

And Every unit has its weaknes just like Spartan Hoplites can be defeated by Units that have longer spears.

So, IMO id say the Urban Cohort because of the way they can defeat almost any unit.

I'd say Pontic Heavy Cavalry, they are fast and fight with both missiles and swords. But then again Praetorian Cavalry rocks 2.

there is no best unit imo. how ever the price of unit always indicate how usefull/fearsome they are, so most usefull would be elephants

I think Cataphracts have nearly no counters. Just look at how I overran those roman legions with 1/3 the number of cataphracts.

Ah not so my friend a unit of persan cav will pepper ya cataphracts full of arrows, then charge in when you're exhausted and finish you off. In rtw every unit has a counter

Unless the enemy has pigs, War Elephants are my fave. Though..fire arrows or artillery can take em down pretty quick.

Cataphracts and Urban Cohorts both rule too

A good general would sit there in open formation, let you waste all your arrows, and when you caused 7 casualties and charged with your tired troops they would break themselves upon a unit of fresh and hardly underpowered cataphracts. And if my cataphracts are archers, you're taking alot more casualties when we exchange fire.
