Topic Subject: New tactic for romans vs spartans.

I've discovered a tactic quite by accident which i have thoroughly tested and works for both RTW 1.5 Multiplayer and 1.5 Single player.

Pick any unit you want which has the testudo option. Now put guard mode off and deploy the testudo unit around 20 meters in front of the Spartans, and facing them. Now right click on the space behind the Spartans.

When your testudo unit moves to the Spartans it will not attack them but more, jam themselves within the Spartans as they attempt to move behind them. You may loose 1 or 2 soldiers but it does not matter. Then when the Spartan line has been completely disorganised get out of testudo and almost instantly around 5-8 spartans will die. The pike wall will have no effect now.

This works well against noob circles and long lines in multiplayer...

I have to admit I was a bit sceptical at first, but I gave it a test go and it works perfectly! I was able to take out a unit of 2 experience Spartans with a Urban Cohort (3 experience, one weapon, slightly cheaper than the Spartans overall) and they lost only eight men.

Thanks for sharing! It works just great.

So basically testudo is pretty much invinsible to you can get in amongst phalanxes? Sweet.

You could use the testudos and lose some soldiers but, why waste the manpower when you could use Archers and their Flame Arrows to cut the Spartan Phalanx into pieces it always worked for me when I was playing the game during the summer.

That's not what we're talking about though. We're talking about Spartans Vs. Urbans.

I know but, still why waste the lives of your men trying to fight in a close quarters combat fight were depending on the skill of the spartans could easily overwelm your roman soldiers and wipe out the entire unit. Then depending on the situation completely turn the tide of the battle in their favor. I still stand by my choice of using Archers to destroy the phalanx. You have to think about the good of the empire not on the glory you may get from the battle.

When playing against other humans especially high level phalanx troops can be near impossible to kill with archers, their damn shields. Although perhaps Spartans have a lower defensive rating due to their lack of armour?

Once Spartans have to use their swords they aren't very good anymore and they will easily be beaten by Urbans, unless the Spartans are fully upgraded and the Urbans not at all, which won't happen online.

Sorry to say but this idea was posted before and tested by myself. See here. General Willon is the guy who suggested it initially.
