Is it a smart move to go into close combat when you are in testudo formation instead of being lined up and charge?

Against most troops it is best to be normal formation than in testudo as then you will get your charge bonus and will get a greater advantage.

I have found something quite interesting, when in testudo, phalnx units have a hard time hitting your guys, so it's a great formation to hold off enemy troops and then flank the phalnxes with another troop.
