Topic Subject: Getting Good Governor Traits

This is really one of the last mysteries in the game to me, because I've never found a way to make decent city governors. How do you keep your family members from getting all the myriad of undesirable traits?

Generals are easy; send them to war, watch them build up to legendary commander after a number of battles. They'll also inevitably acquire various other battle traits and retinue. Making a 9 star 9 influence dude isn't hard.

But outside of the 'you get negative management traits once you pass 50k denari' line, and academys/temples providing decent retinue, it can be really tough to find people decent at governing cities. The starting family is usally very good, but with 2-3 exceptions per generation, the people that follow them have little to no acumen. What are your strategies to keep them from becomming alcoholics/going insane/degenerating into debauchery/gambling away everything/etc? Or is this just something built into the game to remind us that nepotism actually doesn't work very well?

Your post pretty much answered your question.

With too much money in the bank, bad things happen. I can give you a tip on how to avoid bad traits, but not how to get good ones.

Avoiding bad traits when too much money resides in treasury: Move your governors. The trait chance occurs only when the Family member resides within a city and has 100% of his/her movement points available. So move the person out of the city, and then back in.

Also, I have noticed that the longer the game goes on, the more the bad traits come out- and I always keep my treasury at 48.000, to the point of creating stacks of peasants to eat up excess treasury. But as time goes on, you get more bad things. Maybe the level of civilization/city has something to do with it.

Make sure to build academies in all of your cities, and upgrade them. Upgrade the rest of your infrastructure too. Also, as Terikel said, try not to leave your governors sitting around. Short of using cheats or modifying the traits file, those are the only ways.

I kinda figured that this would be the response, but just wanted to give it a try in case there was something somebody else knew.

In my opinion it is best to switch governors around, sort of because if they get a bad reputation in one city they might not in another, either way, never leave governors idle, they have their own hopes and dreams of glory too you know (well sort of because they are only people in a video game) either way leaving anything idle is it's absolute end. First of all, never ever build too many economical buildings or your governor will get rich without the responsibility of wealth. Have him kill a bunch of rebels once in a while to keep up his reputation, and of course, build academies. Good luck.

The information I have given works for most mods.

Remember you could always swap retinues around a bit. The temple retinues work quite well. Pawn off drunken uncles and unhinged loons to some old guy you don't really need and exile him. Hopefully his retinues will die with him. A good way of getting decent governors is to for them to either be in the senate council or even if they used to be. This means being in good favor with the senate and thus accepting and completing their missions. People with traits such as "hates the games" which causes unrest should be kept on the field and used as generals.
