FAQ

1. Do we have a release date?
The game is currently scheduled to be out in February 2009.

2. How many factions will there be?
There will be 12 playable factions, all playable from the start. Currently confirmed factions are Britain, Prussia, France, Spain, America, Austria, the Dutch Republic and the Ottoman Empire. References to Peter the Great and Charles XII mean that Russia and Sweden are likely candidates as well. A CA developer has said:
We have over 50 factions in the game, and we can't create all of them in the full detail they deserve. Therefore we limit the number of playable factions, but we can't say which ones are playable just yet, simply because we haven't made a final decision. Rest assured though that all major factions (even the non-playable ones) will be represented in high detail.
3. Do we know system requirements? Will the game require Vista?
There are no released system requirements yet, but the game will run with DirectX 9.0, so Vista will not be a minimum requirement for the game. DX10 support is likely but not needed.

4. What period will the game cover?
Empire: Total War will cover the 18th century and the early 19th century.

5. What will the campaign map be?
The latest information suggests that it will include Europe, North and South America, North Africa, Central Asia, India, and Indonesia.

So what I'm confused about is the notion of a "tieless" campaign map...what exactly does this mean?

Tile-less. Basically, you won't be confined to grid-like tyles (Which are the size of a city, usually).
New system of recruiting, though. Hm...

I'm guessing, where as in other games, you have to control at least say 45 provinces to win, this game you have to control all.

The new issue of PC Gamer UK, which is in my hands, has Empire: Total War as its cover game (massive 3-page foldout cover, no less) and a sizeable preview of it. The text is the same as was in the CVG preview, but there's a few more screenshots and they're rather larger than the ones on the internet. A4 shot of that ship, for instance.

Jumbalaya, having read the IGN preview's relevant section:
The Grand Campaign in Empire: Total War features a wide range of factions, from British Colonists/Americans in the west to the Mughals in India. In between will be all manner of power and prestige players, like Britain and the Ottoman Empire, and smaller groups like Native Americans and Africans.
They are not saying that you can play as them. Simply that the game features them as factions, which we knew already. CA is saying that there will be 10 playable factions and I think we can fairly safely say that those will be the big players of the day, so no Native Americans playable as standard.

I believe they said that there will be 10 playable factions from the get-go, and the rest you unlock when you beat the game.

No, that's not what they've said.

They've specifically referred to ten playable factions and 50+ factions overall, the rest being non-playable. No mention has been made of unlocking factions - those 10 will be available from the off, but the rest will be slightly less detailed. That's the current plan according to CA representatives.

5 days is a bit long. I'm willing to bet that there will be hundreds of people that immediatly hunt down the required file, edit it as needed and release it to the world within about 2 hours.

I, for one, have been waiting for this for a long time. An entirely new Total War engine can only be a good thing.

The new recruiting system sounds interesting. The old city-by-city and unit-by-unit system probably wouldn’t gel that well with the Napoleonic Wars. I'm curious to see what it is.

I like the sound of it, from the two articles I've read.

Being the historical stickler I am, I'd like to see the various African tribes represented to some extent. However, they probably can't do that for gameplay reasons, unless they spent a lot of time making a system similar to what was done in Europa Barbarorum with the rebels.

It sounds a little funny, how the CA staff member said that sword and lance-armed units suffer a bit at the hands of musketeers...

I also hope that all the major factions start off fairly small, so it's a tooth-and-nail struggle to the top, all the way, because there are so many different groups sniping you from all directions.
