Bought my new computer six months ago and I'm prepared for EMPIRE TOTAL WAR BABY!!!!!!

General Rawlinson- This is most unsatisfactory. Where are the Sherwood Foresters? Where are the East Lancashires on the right?

Brigadier-General Oxley- They are lying out in No Man's Land, sir. And most of them will never stand again.

I reckon my machine should be able to handle it. It can manage M2TW on full graphics so I live in joyful hope!

The only thing that I might need to do (hopefully), is upgrade my RAM a bit, apart from that, I'm haing the same thoughts as Gaius, er, I mean Saxo.

My current PC replaced an ageing Pentium 4 about 7 months back. It's specs:

  • AMD Athlon64 X2 6400+ processor
  • Asus Crossfire motherboard w/ 1,000 MHz fsb
  • 4 GB PC6400 DDR2 SDRAM installed
  • 512 MB EVGA Nvidia GeForce 8800 video card
  • DVD RRW optical drive
  • WinXP64 Pro operating system

With the possible exception of the OS (which wasn't able to accept Europa Unversalis: Rome), I just might be ready for Empire: Total War. If not, I can always switch to the latest Windows Vista OS and upgrade the video card to one which might support the latest drivers.

I forcibly upgraded (meaning my laptop died) my computer in February. I built the following:

Intel Core2 Duo Core E8400 - 3.0 Ghz (not overclocked)
    4 GB PC6400 DDR2 SDRAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT (512 MB)
    WD Raptor HDD - 150 GB @ 10,000 RPM
Windows Vista Home Premium Edition (32 bit)

Not a capital ship, but maybe a really good Fifth Rate?

    Me too.

I think I gotta. M2TW plays reasonably well, so long as I point my battle camera away from the settlement, and it also lags a bit on the campaign map when it's a really crowded part, like Europe. And I've had to scale down the graphics options a bit.
    Computer is from 2003. (=ancient)

    So, definately.

I am still debating about my current upgrades
I was thinking of buying one eVGA 280 with the 1gig of vram and than buying a dedicated sound card, or buying a second 9800GT...

You certainly don't need either of the new nVidia cards to play Empire, Daelon. As it stands the 280 (and to a lesser extent the 260) are a colossal waste of money unless you're gaming on more than 24" of screen.

Pretty much all of the compatibility issues have been solved now, unless you're running real old programs. Not to mention a 32bit operating system won't allow for more than 4gb of RAM in total, including the RAM on the graphics card.

Great thank you, the 280's and the 260's would burn a whole in my wallet, and the 9800GT's are such a good deal right now.

I am planning an upgrade whether or not ETW comes out. System set up is as follows:

    E8500 Core 2 Duo
    4gb RAM
    Radeon HD 4850

I plan to overclock the E8500 to around 4Ghz.

I have a question slightly related to this thread.
While looking for an upgrade, I noticed that the more high-end the system, the higher the wattage of the power supply. One of them even had a 1000 watt supply.
Does that mean it uses 1000 watts while operating, or is that the maximum it can handle? And that the actual usage is a bit (or a lot?) lower?

Thats 1,000 watts respectively, while running.

The E8500 is my favourite CPU right now, you certainly won't need to overclock it to run Empire my friend

darthvincor, a 1000 watt power supply means that the computer has 1000 watts 'on tap' if you like, it won't be using the full 1000 unless the machine is the Millenium Falcon .

1000 Watts is pretty much overkill, and 700 Watts is probably the most you'll need for a high end system at the moment. The new system I built is almost identical in spec to the one you just posted and I run it on a 700W PSU no problem. The money you save can be put towards say a RAM upgrade or a better graphics card.

Hehe this game comes out on my 16th birthday. I will most likely have to get a new pc after this game comes out as some of you know from my previous thread what a piece of crap laptop I have. How much money does one need to build a decent gaming computer?
