Topic Subject: RTW on CD compatibility with Windows 10?
posted 19 June 2016 15:24 EDT (US)
So, I know about the whole KB3086255 update issue thingy from here, and here (NB. ignore option 3 as it's against the CoC)...

As far as I can see you can't just uninstall the update from Windows 10 (and I'm not sure I'd want to since it's a security thing, and being technologically illiterate in the Age of Viruses I prefer to try and play safe)... I have the game on Steam, so I can play it - but you can't mod on Steam, which is one of my favourite things.

Are there any other solutions to getting the CD version to run on Windows 10?

P.S. As to this thread, the problem doesn't actually have anything to do with admin priviledges: I am the administrator (and only user) on my PC, yet this is exactly the error I get when I try to start the game using the CD. Pretty confident the actual problem is the one outlined above, since on Windows 7-8.1 the fix for it seems to have worked.

Edorix, I'm not sure how extensive of modding you want to do to RTW, but the Steam files are set up basically the same as when you got the game off a disc. When I installed RTW from Steam on my new Windows 10 machine, I promptly went and swapped out all of my usual mod files to make the game to my liking.

Is there some rookie trick that I don't know about that makes it possible to mod on Steam? Because whenever I try and run a modded version of the game through Steam it gives me errors that I didn't use to get when doing it with the CD version. (I only got the steam version relatively recently, I've always modded using the CD installation.)

I'm not sure; I don't think I do the same level of modding that you do, but I've done all of the same things I did to my CD copy of RTW, like modifying the various export_descr files. I haven't tried a -modswitch or anything along those lines though. Maybe post what issues/errors you're seeing and I can see if I can replicate them?
