Hello everyone, from now on, I will use this thread to update you on the mod I'm doing, Spartacus Total War.

The mod will focus on the gladiator uprising lead by Spartacus and on the many events taking place by that time.
The mod will be as historically accurate as possible, having in mind, of course, that his is a game and supposed to be fun, not a history lesson.

The new factions will be:

The Republic of Rome (previous Julii)

The Gladiator Rebels (previous Macedon)

The Roman Rebels (previous Scipii)

The Eastern Provinces (previous Brutii)

The Celts (previous S.P.Q.R.)

The Mauritanians (previous carthage)

The Kingdom of Bithinya and Pergamum (previous Seleucid Empire)

The map will suffer some changes. More regions will be added, as well as the starting territories for the remaining factions, and some tricks I won't reveal so you can be surprised while playing it.

Since I'm no artist whatsoever, I'm using skins and units that already exist on the game and those on Andalus' AUP (to who I give my many thanks in advance for giving me permission to use them), with some minor changes. You will see for yourself, in time.

If someone is willing, I could really use some help creating faction symbols. I have the ideas but not the talent to make them. If so, just say something here and I'll contact you.

This is all for now. As soon as I have news, I will update.

I think it looks very good. Excellent, even.

One slight issue is the face appears to be darker than the limbs, though that may just be the lighting.

Also, I think that Kontophoroi was a good suggestion for the Greek cavalry.

Have you thought about creating a unit like the Spartan Royal Guard, but just for Spartacus's gladiator faction? It would be non-recruitable (unlike the royal guard), but retrainable in specific cities. To me it seems wrong to not have Spartacus directly involved in the battles. Maybe a juiced up version of the Arcani would work.

Thank you, Andalus
Now that you mention it, it does the face does seem darker, but must be from the lightning because I did not edited the face or the limbs.

MrBonzai, I don't know if I undertood what you mean. What Royal Guard are you talking about? The Pontic Royal Guard?

Spartacus will be a general in the game, just like any other general, except it might have a few retinue members and traits to juice him up a little. After all, he was the brain of the rebellion and commander of the gladiator armies.

The gladiators will have plenty of units of their own. The gladiators, for starters. The romans won't be able to recruit them anymore. And other units that I have thought up, some are already ready. I have not shown them yet because I want to learn a little more about 3ds Max and skinning to toy with them a bit more.

Mauritania

Although from punnic descendance, the Mauritanian Royal House has long relied on the manny berber tribes that live in its territory for military support.

Hillmen

Desert Axemen

Dismounted Lancers

Mediterranean Infantry

Gaetulian Skirmishers

Berber Archers

Desert Cavalry

Camel Raiders

Lancers

Berber Chieftain

Elephants

Some units may yet be added. I think another infantry unit would be useful...

Once again any ideas, suggestions, comments, etc, will be most welcome.

In which case, that would not be possible. I do not think you can create units which are non-recruitable and only retrainable, without hacking the source code, and that is of course illegal.

But I see no reason why not to do the same as Dime. The whole point of the Royal Guard having such a lengthy recruitment time is that it would not be worth the time and money. You can increase the training time to as much as 244 turns if you really want.

244 Turns?!

You have a limit thing, something like. You can only recruit 2 Royal Guards every 6 turns. And guards them selves take 7 turns to train. But then again i'm a noob with no experience whatsoeva with modding so you do it your way since your making it mate.

Sconderix, I'm delaying that for two motives: I have not decided yet if or not the Celts will be included and how. Also, I am trying to learn some few things more on 3ds Max so I can creat the units I really want for the Celts.
Do you have any suggestions?

I don't think I will make units with almost impossible recruting times or money. There will those that are expensive and that maybe require a few more turns to recruit (two, three). That allowed to the fact that they will be only recruitable on very advanced tiers should make then rare and valuable.

Awesome.

For the Celtic units i'd search on the net (Maybe wiki) for some information if you want histoically accurate units.

But the main units you'd need would be:

-Woad Infantry (Swordsmen, maybe archers and cavalry...)
-Some form of warbands
-Maybe some special units found in Celtic Tribes

But remember these are just suggestions, your mod your choice.

Faction Preview:

The Gladiators

Velite Gladiator

Mirmillo Gladiator

Samnite Gladiator

Retarius Gladiator.
I know they used a net and not a shield, but all my attempts to creat a net failed miserably. Not to mention not having an animation for it.

Spartacus had to use many strategies to win against the the armies sent against him and his followers. Doesn't matter if they are somewhat archaic if they are effective!
Hoplite Gladiator

Chosen Gladiator

Greek Pirates
Mercenaries hired to aid in the Gladiator's fight for freedom!

Not many years have passed since the Social Wars that opposed Rome against the rest of the cities in Italy. And although they have been defeated, some of them are always prompt to rebel against the Roman oppressor.
Trained and equiped in Roman style, this troops are a precious addition to Spartacus's army.

Samnite Warriors

Marcii Warriors

And some mounted units

Gladiator Cavalry

Gladiator Chariots

Ok, so here is the first preview. These are not final, I may and probably will make changes in some of them.
Here's what I already have in mind:
Give shields to Mirmillo and Samnite Gladiators, give a sword instead of a spear to the Chosen Gladiators.

Also, I'm not sure about the Greek Pirates... I like the idea, but I don't know if the unit is the right thing... What do you think?

Give all the suggestions and opinions you want, they are most welcome and needed in order to improve the mod!

Hello
If i might be so bold to suggest a Strong cavarly unit for the celts. Maybe some thing like Noble Cheiftan cavarly. And maybe a unique Elite Spearman unit. the celts used spears effectively the spears were called Materis and a Javalin unit and the javalins were called Gaesum.
You may use these if you would like.
But you don't have to it is your mod.

And actually, you kind of read my mind, because I'm planning to give the Celts that kind of cavalry, to somewhat reflect the various tribes that composed the the celtic people.

I said model, not skin.

That said, this belief that armour was cowardly is a little over-exaggerated. The Celtic peoples were not averse to armour, though most had not not the wealth and status to afford it. As such it was the elite sections of society who wear armour, though it was not of the same quality as that of the Romans.

I am also reading a book on barbarians (Barbarians) that said the celic people were the iron masters of europe and even the romans could not compete with them in the quality of their armor and weapons.
Thankyou

Ok, here's a new update. These are some units I've been working on.

The Iberian Tribes have suffered the influence of foreign people since anyone can remember, but they still keep some of their Celtiberian ways.
Celtiberian Infantry

Celtiberian Skirmishers (will also be slingers)

Iberian Heavy Infantry

Centuries of war against "more advanced" armies have taught the Gauls the value of fighting well armoured and protected.
Gallic Heavy Infantry

These units reflect the greek influence in Egypt. Something I think it is seriously lacking on vanilla.
Macedonian Nobles (shield by Halie Satanus)

Ptolemaic Guard.

And finally, some new units for the Gladiators.
Shepherd Slingers

Gladiator Archer

Gladiator Berserker Only the most violent and untamable of the slaves, those who could not be trusted to not kill their owners as soon as they had a chance, were sent to the quarries. Mostly captured warriors, the slaves sent to the quarries were as good as dead, the average life time on a quarrie was little more than a year. Now, making of their previous tool their arms, these men's bloodlust knows no limits!
(armour?)

(or no armour?)

I'm not sure about if I should use or not the Gladiator Berserkers... what do you think?

Just a little observation on units: the gauls heavies are very good, but i´m not sure about the rectangular shield...a oval one would seem better...but if you gave them javelins keep them, gauls without pre-charge javelins is one of the main vanilla wrongs.

If you keep true to the original idea of Historical Accuracy, this would also happen to be a great teaching tool. Heck, a slightly modified version of this would be perfect! Look what the History Channel did with vanilla R:TW in their series Decisive Battles. That is what you could accomplish, besides the popularity boost of a very impressive looking mod.
