I live in Texas. It's a beautiful place with many state parks and thriving cities. We have excellent education and a wealthy economy. Apparently several groups think that the USA is becoming a socialist government (I partially agree), and that Texas should secede from the Union and once again, become the Republic of Texas as it was in 1836.

I know that some of you are from Europe and could, quite frankly care less about this, but this would have a major impact on the current. I believe that Texas could survive as an independent nation, but it would be a strange alienated world. Do I think Texas could secede? I'm sure that the government would do its damndest to make it so that we couldn't secede, but I think its possible. To me, I think this is just another rebellion against Obama being president of the US. I personally despise Obama for spending so much money. Really, why take my hard-earned money and being financially responsible situation and hand it to that hobo that wants the $10 million house.
Proof
I'm asking these questions about the scenario of secession.
Is Texas a net payer or receiver of taxes? How would this affect America's board with Mexico? Would Texas become insolvent if hit by a couple of big hurricanes in one summer? How much would this affect the price of oil? How much of Texas' economy is dependent on American military facilities? How much of the US Armed Services is Texan, and how many of those do it only for tax purposes, versus having an actual allegiance.
Who knows?, maybe in a few years, textbooks will be corrected and have the question:
Q: How many states are there in the US?
A: 49
