The Man with the Laughs

Gooooooooood-byyyyyyye Vietnaaaaam! That's right, I'm history... I'm outta here. I got the lucky ticket home, baby. Rollin, rollin, rollin'... keep them wagons rollin', rawhide! Yeah, that's right... the final Adrian Cronauer broadcast... and this one is brought to you by our friends at the Pentagon. Remember the people who brought you Korea? That's right, the U.S. Army. If it's being done correctly, here or abroad, it's probably not being done by the Army.

In honor of Robin Williams, I've decided to forsake the rules and simple post a lot of what made him special to us: his humor and ability to make us laugh!!

Genie: [turns into a cheerleader] Rick 'em, rack 'em, rock 'em, rake! Stick that sword into that snake!
Jafar: You stay out of this!
Genie: [Weakly] Jafar, Jafar, he's our man; if he can't do it, great!

When Christopher Reeve was in the hospital after his accident, Robin came to visit him. Reeve said this about that surprise visit:
Then, at an especially bleak moment, the door flew open and in hurried a squat fellow with a blue scrub hat and a yellow surgical gown and glasses, speaking in a Russian accent. He announced that he was my proctologist, and that he had to examine me immediately...it was Robin Williams...for the first time since the accident, I laughed. My old friend had helped me know that somehow I was going to be okay.
When Stephan Spielberg was filming "Schindler's List", Robin would call him to cheer him up. I think I only called him once, maybe twice. I called him when I was representing People for the Valdheimers Association. A society devoted to helping raise money to help older Germans who had forgotten everything before 1945. I remember him laughing and going 'thank you.'"

We don't delete accounts, but we can close them.

(Deletion messes up the threads where the person posted.)

Closing is irreversible, by the way. be sure you really really mean it.

Better to take a self-ban for a while.

Emails can be directed to me; I fix everything anyway.

@Excelsior: Sorry this is a bit late, but the reason EB takes so much longer is because of the major scripting for traits, events and reforms made by the EB team. Honestly, the loading time depends on the hardware and capabilities of your rig. My old comp which ran Rome: Total War and Rome: Total Realism perfectly took several minutes to load EB, but my current one (which I had custom built nearly 5 years ago) loads it almost instantly.

Thanks, DU. I was afraid it was something like that. Is the Extended Greek Mod a fairly realistic one? Maybe it's just me, but I don't care to play with something that most experts feel is less than par.

I didn't play XGM for very long so my memories of my experience with it aren't too vivid. The only thing I really remember about it are the units, some of which were historical and others were for "flavor" (fantasy or very obscure units meant to spice up battles).

My friends are divided straight down the middle about it. Half saying it's an incredible movie highlighting the struggles and experiences of our country's fighting men and women, the other saying it's a propaganda movie meant to rouse the American people and justify the Iraq War. I myself stand somewhere in-between though after learning about certain facts that the movie glossed over or ignored like the ones on this list I'm starting to lean more towards the 2nd party.

So, it's election time here in Greece!

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jan/23/syriza-poll-lead-greek-elections-alexis-tsipras-antonis-samaras

This could be a chance of breaking the particracy that has ruled Greece since 1974, but it could also disastrous, as the Golden Dawn FAR-far Right/Neonazi party seems to be third (which means that if the first two parties fail to achieve a parliamentary majority of 151 MPs and form a government, Golden Dawn will be given the chance to form iys own government). We'll see...

Looks like the Left is going to win/has won.

Now it is a matter of finding any party taht will work with them to make a coalition. They need like what? 2 seats?

No Neonazi worries there.

Well AE, the SY.RIZ.A party which has won the elections consists of a number of smaller "subparties", whose political views vary between the far left and the centro-socialist approach which was employed by the early PASOK party in the 80s and 90s. In addition, SY.RIZ.A's growth has attracted many politicians from other left parties, including PASOK, who were more or less part of the previous governments and supported the ample spending back in the 90s. So, it is up to SY.RIZ.A's leadership to create a clear approach to the matters at hand, such as the debt, while at the same time convincing the more extreme ellements that the partnership with the right-wing party Independent Greeks will not alter their promised policy...

BTW, a historical note for those not familiar: PASOK is the PAnhellenic SOcialist Movement (Kinema in Greek) which was formed by Andreas Papandreou in the 70s and rule Greece in the years 1981-1989, 1993-2004, 2009-2011 with large majorities (48% in the 1981 elections and 44% in the 2009 elections; by comparison SY.RIZ.A. won the 2015 elections by obtaining 36% of the votes).

Also, since 1974 and after the fall of the military junta whic ruled Greece between 1967 and 1974, Greece has been ruled by two parties: PASOK and New Democracy interchangeably, except in 1989 and 2011-2012 when more than one parties agreed on an "ecumenical government" lead by a politician belonging to no party.

I wonder how long it will be until the USA has the same fractured system?

All it would take is to happen is tha tthe two Big Parties- Republicans and Democrats, fracture along irreparable lines.

We see it already starting with the Tea Party. Now, if they and other independents grow, and the Democrats likewise divide between moderates (who are very much like Republican moderates) and those mroe extreme, you will see a very interesting mix of independents and classics in Congress, making for quite an exciting mess!

The thing about the US system is that it strongly favors a two party system, though. There have been a couple of historical cases where there were more than two major parties, but they're rare, because adding a third (or fourth) party isn't rewarded with election wins.

I've found that I've become more and more disillusioned with the US system each coming year, I'm tired of the over-generalizations, I;m tired of the polarization and the hatred along party lines. I'm scared to think about the future, the divides seem to be becoming more and more marked due to modern "news" organizations inciting hatred at every turn. Just look at Ferguson and the Trayvon Martin cases. Each case has led to increased hatred between the parties due to the media's guilty-until-proven-innocent attitude when it comes to a white man shooting a minority, in what(to me) seems to be an obvious case of self-defense, in Ferguson(I'm not so sure about the Trayvon case). I wonder if the US is following France into the depths of hatred across party lines.
posted 03 February 2015 02:03 EDT (US)     2068 / 2504
As those divides spread, then parties fracture, leading to a situation where the two-party system breaks into four, then eight, and then the US is in the same boat as the Europeans.

The US system was not set up with parties in mind- in fact, in those days, there were no real parties. There were groups of men who worked together, but those groups shifted like sands under a stream. It was later in teh 1800's that parties formed such as we know them today.

Thus if parties fracture, we are back to the original meaning- a man/woman elected to represent that area's interest in the nation as a whole.

True, the Americans are used to a two-party system, but if those parties divide (like the Tea Party seems to be trying to do), what then? I speak here of the future and possibilities, not of the past.

I think that "knight" is more of an honorary title nowadays rather than a warrior as in the medieval knights or a class as in ancient Rome, Terikel
I do recall though that a Medieval prince was knighted on the battlefield, I think it was Edward the Black Prince...

Regarding politics and parties, having more than two strong parties is indeed a rare occurance. I don't know much about the political history of other countries, but here in Greece it has led to utter corruption and the malfunction of most civil services. This is due to the two former leading parties appointing people in the civil services sector without the proper qualifications, just to "buy"
their votes. In fact, before the law about the permanent employment of civil servants, each new government would lay off all the previous employees and hire their own...

a Medieval prince was knighted on the battlefield
That happened whenever the under-age princeling was deemed by his displayed valor to be a man. Usually the young men of the nobles and royalty were squired to others to learn the trade. They were knighted when it was deemed "the time". And if that occurs on a battlefield, then sobe it.

Most were done at 18 or 21, and could then begin to take up royal/noble duties.

Better petty in the sense of squabbling over details in what is a broad consensus, than serious in the sense of extremists of whichever end vying for primacy. But it can be very exasperating in Britain too - the one thing it seems people can agree on is how unhappy they are with their politicians.
