The Man with the Laughs

Gooooooooood-byyyyyyye Vietnaaaaam! That's right, I'm history... I'm outta here. I got the lucky ticket home, baby. Rollin, rollin, rollin'... keep them wagons rollin', rawhide! Yeah, that's right... the final Adrian Cronauer broadcast... and this one is brought to you by our friends at the Pentagon. Remember the people who brought you Korea? That's right, the U.S. Army. If it's being done correctly, here or abroad, it's probably not being done by the Army.

In honor of Robin Williams, I've decided to forsake the rules and simple post a lot of what made him special to us: his humor and ability to make us laugh!!

Genie: [turns into a cheerleader] Rick 'em, rack 'em, rock 'em, rake! Stick that sword into that snake!
Jafar: You stay out of this!
Genie: [Weakly] Jafar, Jafar, he's our man; if he can't do it, great!

When Christopher Reeve was in the hospital after his accident, Robin came to visit him. Reeve said this about that surprise visit:
Then, at an especially bleak moment, the door flew open and in hurried a squat fellow with a blue scrub hat and a yellow surgical gown and glasses, speaking in a Russian accent. He announced that he was my proctologist, and that he had to examine me immediately...it was Robin Williams...for the first time since the accident, I laughed. My old friend had helped me know that somehow I was going to be okay.
When Stephan Spielberg was filming "Schindler's List", Robin would call him to cheer him up. I think I only called him once, maybe twice. I called him when I was representing People for the Valdheimers Association. A society devoted to helping raise money to help older Germans who had forgotten everything before 1945. I remember him laughing and going 'thank you.'"

I feel like that's kind of a trend in most industrialized countries. I wonder if that's due to the internet allowing people to be better informed about the dumb stuff their elected officials do.

I wonder if people are actually worse informed rather than better. First off I suppose we mustn't imagine "the people" as a unit in any sense - "people" (ha) often seem to talk about "The People" in this sense, as if they were all (for example) anti-EU ultra-socialists. So, obviously some will be better-informed than others (because of the newspaper they read, or the company they keep), some will have a more sophisticated understanding or appreciation of policies than others (because of sharpness of intelligence and a head clear of partisan tribalism for unbiased reasoning).

I think part of the problem is that many people do not understand or appreciate the reasoning behind some political decisions, and perhaps think they know best. In the UK I am thinking of things like cutting corporation tax or the top rate of income tax (seen as sops to the rich by many, although intended as economic stimulus); or the long refusal by the main parties to permit an EU referendum (which the europhobes [as opposed to eurosceptics or eurocritics], encouraged by the worst of the press, cannot understand because they turn a blind eye to the possible adverse consequences).

I think people have been very cynical about politicians since before the days of the internet - I'm thinking of Yes Minister, a British political-satire sitcom of the early '80s. Maybe mass media rather than the internet then? Dissatisfaction has definitely grown since the post-war period when (in Britain, again, apologies) practically everyone belonged to a political party - only a few hundred thousand do now out of a population of 65 million. Perhaps that has to do with improvements in education and other cultural changes, in many Western countries, towards individual thought and critical-mindedness... there's months of interesting research to be done there.

That said I know in Germany Angela Merkel has excellent popularity ratings; I think somewhere in the 70s% of people think she is doing a good job. So it's not certainly not ubiquitous in contemporary 'developed'-economy democracies.

If I remember my Livy it's not all new though. In the early days of the Roman Republic there was tremendous dissatisfaction among the plebeians because the patricians hogged all the offices of state (some might say nothing has really changed there then).

Of course.

The breadth and width of the Stupidity of Man knows no boundaries. It is amazing in its endless capacity.

The only true marvel of it all is that despite this, we still grow and evolve.

At least we think we do.

I do like air conditioning on hot summer days, though. A welcome relief. Too bad Harald Hardrada couldn't stand the heat back in the day.

EDIT: I do like indoor plumbing as well. Keeps out the flies from biting my ass when done correctly.

Honesty seems to be the only way to ensure that you're not dragged down by the political jargon that floods social media nowadays. If X's position is that of honesty and logic, without any evidence of manipulative intent, then X's position is one that I respect.

But then again politics is an art of bias, so it's not worth that much of thought when compared with other fields of greater use and importance.

Perhaps an Atilla vs Ghengis style theme?

As for PC culture, I don't think it's gotten too far out of hand, at least as far as common usage is concerned. For example, while news anchors and government officials are far more PC in their word choice, the common person, to me at least, isn't as PC in their vocabulary.

I like this idea. It reminds me of the philosopher John Rawls' theory of the original position - biases and personal interests left aside, everyone should be able to agree on what is a fair system. Of course, the trouble is that this isn't the case... in theory there could be many honest and logical political positions, e.g. the basic underlying assumptions of economic left versus economic right, and still disagreement.

But I agree with what you're saying. It's a welcome respite when politicians are actually genuine. The trouble is in a democracy it is inevitable that the politicians will need to persuade if they wish to win, even if that victory is desired solely (or primarily) for the best and most selfless reasons.
But then again politics is an art of bias, so it's not worth that much of thought when compared with other fields of greater use and importance.
This is interesting, I don't suppose you could expand?

So about that recently released Cities: Skylines from Colossal Order and Paradox Interactive... Is good Simulated City or City-Builder, as my accrued +22hrs of playing the game since release shall testify for me. So far I have stuck to my 2km2 starting title, you can unlock and buy eight other surrounding titles to either build in or expand in to, and currently have a population of 25,000 simulated agents (people).

Proabably a good idea. The only ones i was really looking at are Rome with the Alexander Expansion, and Fall of the Samurai since they are the ones i need. If i ever make it big, i will go back and get all the DLC for Empire, Napoleon, Shogun 2 and Rome 2.

I did recently get the Celtic and Blood Dlc for Attila though. Havent had a chance to try them out unfortunately but they should be good.

I was really disappointed the other day- I had tickets to go see The Black Keys live in concert with my brother in Sydney, but sadly they had to cancel all of their Australian shows due to an injury the Drummer has... Sad times..

That sucks AE, I thought about getting my sister tickets to one of their shows in Columbus, but it would've been expensive just to get their not to mention get the tickets.(the city is 2-3 hours away). I sort of regret it.
