The Man with the Laughs

Gooooooooood-byyyyyyye Vietnaaaaam! That's right, I'm history... I'm outta here. I got the lucky ticket home, baby. Rollin, rollin, rollin'... keep them wagons rollin', rawhide! Yeah, that's right... the final Adrian Cronauer broadcast... and this one is brought to you by our friends at the Pentagon. Remember the people who brought you Korea? That's right, the U.S. Army. If it's being done correctly, here or abroad, it's probably not being done by the Army.

In honor of Robin Williams, I've decided to forsake the rules and simple post a lot of what made him special to us: his humor and ability to make us laugh!!

Genie: [turns into a cheerleader] Rick 'em, rack 'em, rock 'em, rake! Stick that sword into that snake!
Jafar: You stay out of this!
Genie: [Weakly] Jafar, Jafar, he's our man; if he can't do it, great!

When Christopher Reeve was in the hospital after his accident, Robin came to visit him. Reeve said this about that surprise visit:
Then, at an especially bleak moment, the door flew open and in hurried a squat fellow with a blue scrub hat and a yellow surgical gown and glasses, speaking in a Russian accent. He announced that he was my proctologist, and that he had to examine me immediately...it was Robin Williams...for the first time since the accident, I laughed. My old friend had helped me know that somehow I was going to be okay.
When Stephan Spielberg was filming "Schindler's List", Robin would call him to cheer him up. I think I only called him once, maybe twice. I called him when I was representing People for the Valdheimers Association. A society devoted to helping raise money to help older Germans who had forgotten everything before 1945. I remember him laughing and going 'thank you.'"

All in all, I thought they did a good job and I found it rather enjoyable.

On a separate note, I decided to install RTW on two different computers yesterday, with somewhat mixed results. Put the Steam version on my new Windows 10 machine- most to see how many elephants in a blizzard it took to bring my FPS down under 30- and had some issues with the anti-aliasing. I also installed the version off the disc onto my family's Windows 8.1 machine. That one took more than a little messing around with to get it to work properly; it's a good thing I looked into it for someone a little while ago

I agree EOJ, there were elements in the film that seemed to be almost a blatant copy and past of the originals, which for me was a bit of a downer, but I can see why they did it.

Did anyone else expect a somewhat bigger ending for Han Solo? I thought for sure it would be something epic but I suppose it suited the overall temperament of the movie.

GS- how is Windows 10? I have been considering upgrading but didn't want to be just another beta tester for Microsoft. Is it worth upgrading to it from Windows 7?

As you say, it suited the overall tone of the movie, and I feel like it made more of an impact for not being flashy or overly dramatic.

If you're running Windows 7 and like it, I wouldn't upgrade. However, if you're in the market for a new computer, definitely buy it with Windows 10. I've heard that a lot of the issues with 10 arise when upgrading an older version to 10, but I haven't encountered those with the new computer I bought with 10 pre-installed. As for performance, it's basically 7 with a slightly different Start menu and better boot times (although part of that is the SSD I have Windows on). One thing to note; if you like watching DVDs on your computer, there are some issues with playing DVDs on a 10 machine on the software end when you don't have an HDMI connected monitor, such that I'm still using my 7 machine to watch movies on.

I might stay with Windows 7 until i get my new laptop next year. Speaking of which, i am looking at getting one of those touchscreen laptops that you can flip the screen and it basically becomes an oversized tablet. Anyone have any experience with such things? Do they work well?

We had a guy visit us who had one. I would not say his expereince was typical though- he was to give a presentation and had to use a regular mouse instead of the touch screen due to technical difficulties.

Except for that incident, though, the guy said the thing was great.

Loved The Force Awakens. I managed to get tickets for an advance showing the day before release here in the States, so the theater was filled to the brim with devoted Star Wars fans like myself. The moment on Starkiller Base (You guys know which one) shocked the place silent enough that you could hear a pin needle drop

With regards to Windows 10, I have it on the laptop I purchased last November and I haven't had any of the problem or headaches that other people have mentioned, though it may be because the hardware is more recent and thus more compatible with the software. I'm definitely not going to "upgrade" my six year old Alienware with it though since Windows 7 works just fine and I don't want to risk screwing my rig up

I'm not really inclined to get a touchscreeen laptop. Not because I'm iffy about them, but because having to clean the monitor every hour to clean smudges and fingerprints off of it would get really annoying. I'm not a greaseball, but I have to clean the screen on my iPad at least twice a day.

Hello all, one more late straggler from new year's also.

Somehow I haven't managed to find time to watch the new Star Wars yet, but it sounds like it'll be a fun nostalgia trip if nothing else.

It is. Its kinda nice seeing all the oldies in their old roles. The movie itself i think ticked all the boxes without being incredible. Its like its not the worst Star Wars, but not the best either (of course). Its a decent addition to the collection i think.

I have yet to see this, but do wish to do so.

I remember walking to the cinema to watch Return of the Jedi with some friends. we would watch that all day then return the next day. That was how awesome we found that then. I wonder if this film will rekindle that?

I believe it's now the third highest grossing film of all time, and it's still in theatres...

I have to say, especially if you are a fan of the originals, it's definitely worth seeing.

I've been crazy busy with work and life in general, although I installed BI through Steam the other day and I've been having a lot of fun with it. How have you been, Hannibal?

Wow, an opportunity to use the quote feature. Yea, i negelected this place for a little bit too long. Time to get a little activity going. The only thing with that is, i feel like people go 'oh really? he posted on all these threads? he is so annoying" kind of thing. But i suppose it might just be in my head.

i think so. a friend of mine saw it about 4-5 times whilst it was at the movies- and amoung younger kids it has developed alot of hype and interest in the star wars franchise (as can be seen with the ridiculous amount of Star Wars branded merchandise out there).

Its not in theatres near me here in Aussie.

I am also back into the busy life- Work and university. I should actually be finishing my undergrad degree this year- and have already started on my honors research for next year. I am going to be looking at the Australian army- more specifically the militia in the era around ww2. I find it incredibly interesting.

I'm doing well thank you. My interest in combat simulators and military tactical games has soared recently, and I've spent some 30 or 40 hours playing War-game European Escalation, a really splendid 2011 game with amazingly realistic mechanics, puts you in the shoes of a commander at regiment or battalion level, but lacks fixed-wing aircraft.

I've been thinking of buying Combat Mission: Black Sea but the 55 pricetag's made me hesitate a bit, too much for a single game. Has anyone tried it before?

Wait, BI works on Steam? I thought Steam screwed up RTW through its recent patches and that the lag is completely unbearable.

Also, does anyone have any combat simulator they'd like to recommend or great military literature, specifically literature that describes the details of command, tactics, strategy, and modern post-WWII conflicts? I've found myself deeply interested in the things recently.

I've put about 20 hours into RTW and BI from Steam over the past week. I know having anti-aliasing on on a Windows 10 machine makes the game unlaunchable, but otherwise it's been working great.

I'm not sure if this is quite what you're looking for, but the book We Were Soldiers Once...And Young describes a couple of the early battles in the Vietnam War.

Well it was, but not anymore. Australian theatres tend to screen movies for about less then a month. Not too sure why- maybe just lack of consumer base.

I am keen for Star Wars to come out on dvd though- be able to watch it in more detail.

Has anyone here tried the CD version of RTW on Windows 10? I read somewhere that it did not work, and elsewhere that the Steam version (with Anti-aliasing off) worked great.

I am too befuddled to search correctly, so any tips are appreciated. Also, I have a forummer elsewhere with Win 10 problems running Rise of Nations. Any advice to pass on to her? (It is for her son, you dogs)

I tried installing RTW from the CD to troubleshoot for the forummer we had asking questions in the Bug sub-forum, but wasn't able to get it to work, mostly because I have 2 drives. I outlined the steps that should make it work in this thread.

As for Rise of Nations, with a bit of Googling, I found this link that has some information about how to fix some of the problems RON runs into with newer OS's. Alternately, wait for the Steam version to go on sale and buy it there.

That's quite interesting; do they show a lot of smaller movies, or just not show anything sometimes? Or are most Australian theatres smaller (i.e. less screens) and therefore have to transition over to the next big movie in order to show it?

Mostly just smaller. There are several nearby that have about 10 screens, but they are about 40 min away. My local movie theatre has about 5 screens, so that might be why.

It is a bit harsh when i wanted to go see Star Wars again and it was already gone.

Has anyone seen deadpool? a couple of friends have seen it and said it was great.

I saw R2 was 75% off today; so I decided to shell out the $15 for it. I haven't played any, yet; but it stirred some nostalgia; so I thought I'd pop in and see what was happening here. Unfortunately, it looks as though no one has posted in the R2 forums in over a year. I guess I missed the boat by a bit on that one.

You know, this site, as I was looking into the original RTW, was my first real foray into establishing an internet presence? It's hard to believe that was like 10 years ago, now.

Anyway, I see a few familiar names in these halls, still. How is everyone? Don't feel compelled to answer, because who knows when I'll check back in. It could be never. (Good thing Terikel posted all those hotline numbers in the topic post.) Although, don't make those phone calls, yet; and take heart, I could be back tomorrow!
