The Man with the Laughs

Gooooooooood-byyyyyyye Vietnaaaaam! That's right, I'm history... I'm outta here. I got the lucky ticket home, baby. Rollin, rollin, rollin'... keep them wagons rollin', rawhide! Yeah, that's right... the final Adrian Cronauer broadcast... and this one is brought to you by our friends at the Pentagon. Remember the people who brought you Korea? That's right, the U.S. Army. If it's being done correctly, here or abroad, it's probably not being done by the Army.

In honor of Robin Williams, I've decided to forsake the rules and simple post a lot of what made him special to us: his humor and ability to make us laugh!!

Genie: [turns into a cheerleader] Rick 'em, rack 'em, rock 'em, rake! Stick that sword into that snake!
Jafar: You stay out of this!
Genie: [Weakly] Jafar, Jafar, he's our man; if he can't do it, great!

When Christopher Reeve was in the hospital after his accident, Robin came to visit him. Reeve said this about that surprise visit:
Then, at an especially bleak moment, the door flew open and in hurried a squat fellow with a blue scrub hat and a yellow surgical gown and glasses, speaking in a Russian accent. He announced that he was my proctologist, and that he had to examine me immediately...it was Robin Williams...for the first time since the accident, I laughed. My old friend had helped me know that somehow I was going to be okay.
When Stephan Spielberg was filming "Schindler's List", Robin would call him to cheer him up. I think I only called him once, maybe twice. I called him when I was representing People for the Valdheimers Association. A society devoted to helping raise money to help older Germans who had forgotten everything before 1945. I remember him laughing and going 'thank you.'"

When I lose a battle, I want it to be because I erred. A forgotten flank, or accepting battle when I know it to be a foregone conclusion, underestimating the opponent's veterans, etc.

Not because a computer rolled some dice.

Besides, that's half of the point of the game, the other half being the management aspect, of course, although if you just want that you could play Civilization, couldn't you? What makes (made?) Rome- and Total War games in general- unique was the way it blended RTS battles with TBS management.

Very true.

I do very much enjoy the way this game blends the two- turn-based management, affected by the outcomes of real-time struggles on the field of battle.

I admit I couldn't get into turn based management games like the Europa Universalis series. Even Crusader Kings II failed to keep my attention for long because I hated how battles were out of my control and based on calculated number crunching to decide the victor.

I get an immense kick out of totally screwing the management side, but hanging on to win because I am so bloody wonderful on the battlefield that my sword undoes all the problems the pen caused.

The pen might be mightier than the sword, but the sword speaks louder and stronger at any given moment than a pen ever could.

A very good thing that you had one of these portable devices with its own energy supply, or we would never have known.

Was it a storm, yabba-dabba-doo idiots with bombs and beards, or a faulty powergrid that brought your State to this state?

A massive storm, tearing down transmission towers in combination with lightning strikes on power stations. The automatic failsafes then shut the entire grid down.

My power was out for over 7 hours. Parts of the State are still in the dark ages.
A state-wide blackout caused by cyclonic weather has thrown South Australia into chaos, with traffic gridlocked, planes grounded, thousands of city workers stranded and homes without power.

The state last night declared a “code black” — full emergency response — after 80,000 lightning strikes hit the state and gale-force winds took down three transmission lines and at least 22 towers to isolate South Australia from the national grid.

Premier Jay Weatherill said the lighting strikes “tripped the national grid, causing a state-wide outage and the interconnector from Victoria to shut down”.

“All of this has combined to bring our system down,” he said.

The Premier said any state would be vulnerable to widespread loss of power given the weather conditions and insisted the system had responded as it was designed to under such circumstances.

“This was a weather event not a renewable energy event ... lightning strikes and wind surges caused this,” he said.

“Right now we are in the middle of it and preparing people for the next episode.”

SES chief officer Chris Beattie said emergency conditions would remain for the next 72 hours. He said there had been 400 calls for assistance in the 24 hours to 6.30pm and only 30 traffic lights were working across metropolitan Adelaide. Police took to social media to advise the state’s 1.7 million residents not to travel unless it was urgent, with traffic light outages and rail crossings blocked by boom gates in emergency mode causing gridlock.

Welcome back to my world, where the longbow was the pinnacle of technological advancement!

Seriously though, it sounds like quite a storm. I am pleased to read that few people have been hurt or wounded. I wonder how people will do shopping (those who cannot walk to a grocery store), and if the militia has been needed to help assist the emergency services crews.

A quick question:

Am I allowed to double-post in order to keep the thread going? Enquiring minds would like to know.

It's lucky I'm such an expert on the rules. I feel a bit like an official external consultant for EXCO now.

After a Summer of having no clue what I want to do having finished my BA in Anglo-Saxon & Celtic (very vocational degree, I know), I have decided to remain a student bum by going back to archaeology again by doing a MA at Durham. Durham's right up in the North of England (practically Scotland! *shudders*) and is absolutely gorgeous - only been here a day so far but it's actually prettier than Cambridge in my opinion.

So that's nice for me. Now to find out about all the admin-y stuff I'm supposed to have already done in order to be a student here.

Surely there's some limitation period on double posting anyway. If it's been a week I think we can safely say you haven't selfishly leapt in before the next person has had a chance to finish drafting his or her post.

It is my aim and goal to win this party thread. I think it was the party thread before this (or could be the one before that) that it stalled at 2498 and since you couldnt double post to win i think i took the bullet to let someone else win.

Bring it on! (I dare every to create a surge of activity to get a new party thread by the end of this week. i will do my part.. )

Old people do that. A lot.

At least I am absolved of the double-post dilemma. I do like Pitt's observation. If it goes a week or more since one's last post, then a subsequent post, even consecutive, does not count as a double. There, decided.

Oh wait, you all should hvae your say as well. I may or may not abide by that, but I can propose to try. All for?

Welcome Back!

How bloody hard is it to get a job out there these days! Not me- but my girlfriend is looking endlessly. She got a certification for a job, but the only people that they want need experience, and the jobs that need no experience actually get taken by people with experience anyway.. oh the paradox...
