The Man with the Laughs

Gooooooooood-byyyyyyye Vietnaaaaam! That's right, I'm history... I'm outta here. I got the lucky ticket home, baby. Rollin, rollin, rollin'... keep them wagons rollin', rawhide! Yeah, that's right... the final Adrian Cronauer broadcast... and this one is brought to you by our friends at the Pentagon. Remember the people who brought you Korea? That's right, the U.S. Army. If it's being done correctly, here or abroad, it's probably not being done by the Army.

In honor of Robin Williams, I've decided to forsake the rules and simple post a lot of what made him special to us: his humor and ability to make us laugh!!

Genie: [turns into a cheerleader] Rick 'em, rack 'em, rock 'em, rake! Stick that sword into that snake!
Jafar: You stay out of this!
Genie: [Weakly] Jafar, Jafar, he's our man; if he can't do it, great!

When Christopher Reeve was in the hospital after his accident, Robin came to visit him. Reeve said this about that surprise visit:
Then, at an especially bleak moment, the door flew open and in hurried a squat fellow with a blue scrub hat and a yellow surgical gown and glasses, speaking in a Russian accent. He announced that he was my proctologist, and that he had to examine me immediately...it was Robin Williams...for the first time since the accident, I laughed. My old friend had helped me know that somehow I was going to be okay.
When Stephan Spielberg was filming "Schindler's List", Robin would call him to cheer him up. I think I only called him once, maybe twice. I called him when I was representing People for the Valdheimers Association. A society devoted to helping raise money to help older Germans who had forgotten everything before 1945. I remember him laughing and going 'thank you.'"

I'm in Kuwait. Nothing special about this place other than the oil. And the scorching desert sun too. My place back in Syria is like effing heaven, beautiful place really.

I really hope things settle down in this region. I am tired of Israel being the only "fully developed" country or "advanced economy" in the region; I had high hopes for Syria when I was younger. At this stage peace has to be tantamount - but I cannot help wondering whether it's possible without Western support for the established order, which seems unlikely (or even if then).

Hey Kid! Its been quite a long time since you've come on here, so welcome back! How're things going for you?

@Edorix

Things won't settle down in this region until the oil dries, and the people die. Superstition has brought us down, and left us behind technologically and culturally by hundreds if not thousands of years. And I'm not talking about religion, but about fanaticism and superstition in their extreme forms. This will be the cause of our downfall, and frankly the way I see it, there's no saving this region or the people within.

Israel will remain a developed country for a while, but as with everything, it will not live for long. My guess would be 5-15 years before it all falls apart, mostly due to the growing extremism and zealotry in the region, and the infighting that will occur among various the various factions of Israeli politics. And when it'll happen, things will get very bloody.

Syria has progressed a lot more under Assad jr. than it could have under his father's rule. But I'm afraid that all of this economical development he's done still doesn't help much, because without political reform it still leaves us helpless in the face of the pathetic aristocrats who're manipulating the government to their ends.

Western support wouldn't do much good in Syria. Not at all. Just as "Eastern" support hadn't done us much good in the past 50 years. It created an authoritarian government which oppressed those who criticized its policies, restricted our political rights and disseminated their vile propaganda into our textbooks and corrupted education as a whole. Just as Eastern support nurtured an authoritarian government and strengthened its authority over its people, Western support wouldn't do any better. Support for the current political system would only yield failure, and if the West tries any of its other "alternatives", all you'd have left is an ancient land whose cities overflow with the blood of millions of the minorities. Doesn't get uglier than having extremists tear the country apart with their emirates. I think our best bet at survival and reconstruction is just distancing ourselves from international politics, but with so much at risk both sides aren't going to give up after already having gone so very far to achieve their goals.

Then you probably haven't thought about it enough.

I'm kidding, but that's what I meant by it. I don't doubt there are some people for whom a particular career path is obvious - I find myself thinking about it all so much a choice is impossible.

Well maybe that is the issue, overthinking, rather then over feeling. I feel I know my right path, but if it turns out to be, it's on to the next one.

Although, many people are a whole lot more rational then I am and I cannot give my experience as the be all and end all. How much more do you have on your degree Eddie if you don't mind me asking?

I started on a three-year archaeology course at UCL in 2012/13, but dropped out.

I re-started on a three-year degree in Anglo-Saxon & Celtic at Cambridge in 2013/14, which I intend to see through. Two years left of that. Unfortunately I don't get to do the module which I basically switched course for, Celtic philology, until the final year, but it's still a good course for me.

Despite being extremely academic now, and having grown up doing that kind of thing as well, I don't really want to be an academic afterwards. Tough to get employment, and precious little money for a long time. Plus if I keep up my current record I could end up with a double first, from Cambridge, so it might be a bit of a waste to pour my time into squabbling with other scholars. I think I'd quite to go into politics eventually. You know, make the odd nazi post in the House of Commons just to get kicked out and thereby qualify as an oldie.

Those are some pretty deep and well-developed thoughts there, Hannibal. Impressive, and more, quite likely.Welcome back Kid!I took my history degree and used it to get a commission in the army, then used that to get to Europe where I lifted boxes for a while. Now I run my own archive center. I don't know what I will do next, but it sure ain't going to be lifting boxes. That shit is for the young.

That's massively interesting. Care to elaborate? Where do you do this, and what kinds of documents do you archive?

What I mean with "not knowing what to do next", is, that I do know that I want to continue studying, but I'm just not sure what exactly. I'm not patient enough for an academic carreer, so I'm definitely not gonna be a research assistent nor will I try to apply for a PhD. But I was thinking of studying maybe Arabic history and language. Or maybe I'll just do a one-year teacher's degree so that I have time to think what I really want to do next. I'd love to get involved in some projects in the Middle East, like collecting oral testimonies from Palestinian refugees or something. Loads of projects like that going on.

By the way, when's the last time we've heard something about Tryhard? Has he been around in the last couple of years?

I think humans are fundamentally irrational creatures when it comes to rationalism. From one perspective, it would be far more rational to be irrational like everyone else...

For what evolutionary purpose did we evolve rational thought? Not for the mere sake of rational thought, one may be sure. What happens if we briefly dispense with the idea of rationalism as a good thing in and of itself... Obviously it is a very practical good per se in some cases, such as the rational self-interest in abiding by the laws of one's society, but humans also have other drives: competition.

I think that things humans get heated up about are usually, in one way or another, ultimately, social imperatives. I fancy the purpose many irrational ideas serve is to create and define social groups, to provide non-antisocial (in the sense that they are turned against things outside the social group) outlets for (particularly male?) competitivity. Religion is of course the best example, perhaps the quintessential "irrational belief" from which social groups can be constructed.

... or so I have recently been thinking. Discuss.

Oh, and I haven't seen the video, I just thought I'd have a go at deconstructing the notions of freethinking and humanism from a freethinking humanist perspective.

posted 25 July 2014 17:32 EDT (US)     1797 / 2504
I agree, irrationality often is disguised as rationality, because the majority believe in the same thing. We can see this everywhere these days.

Rational thought is often used by human beings, but in matters other than politics, or any other field dealing with human social and cultural constructs, rather than fundamental science and the like. Critical thinking skills and rationality are required in various aspects of a "craft" or of a field of education, in Math you can't go on proving theorems without using proper logic and following the rules. However the inability of humans to maintain their rationality with regards to certain topics is due to a long history of the same, primarily due to society's influence and what the media propagates.

I think that's an accurate description of the social constructs that surround us. The primary purpose for such 'groups' is to maintain control over their 'members' and instil obedience in them, its only rational because then those members would seek their figures of authority for guidance, thus granting the higher-ups in the hierarchy of these groups complete and utter control over the members. I find this reality daunting, so many people completely inundated by war, politics, choosing sides and the like, while they're ignoring that they're just pawns, expendable pawns in such conflicts. Sad.

Speaking of irrationality, today marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. Although at this stage it's still a fracas in the Balkans.

As late as 24 July 1914, Asquith could write "Happily there seems to be no reason why we should be anything other than spectators."

What annoys me the most is the plethora of sh*tty WW1 histories that are going to be published in the wake of the hundred-year anniversary. Books that could've perfectly been released two years earlier - or not at all - but were scheduled for 2014 specifically to benefit off of the media and the many commemorations that are going to be held. Sure, some of them might be good, but most are going to be awful.

What does everyone think of that? I've been watching StormCloudsGathering's videos as of late, normally I don't watch politics-related videos, just science and entertainment stuff, and I was wondering what you guys thought about it.

Speaking of the 100th anniversary for WW1, I do hope that humanity learns from its past mistakes which have inflicted a great deal of damage on not only humans, but the planet as a whole. I've read somewhere that we're on the brink of the next great extinction, and given the fact that great civilizations do not continue indefinitely and end up falling, we don't have much time left.
