I'm looking for a very specific piece of software. Can anyone help? I'm not sure if it exists, but I feel like it does, and I even feel like there should be multiple options for me, it's just that I'm not sure how to find it, exactly.

I'll try to describe what I'm looking for:
As I read books and articles, I come across many names and concepts. I'd love to built a database of those, so that in a few months/semesters, I can easily trace back in which articles/books I encountered which authors/concepts.

So, I need some kind of database where I can make an entry "Karl Marx", and then everytime I come across Marx I can add references to that entry, so that in a few months, when I need to write an essay on Marx, all I have to do is visit that entry and I can see all references.

Sounds easy enough so far, but there's more.
In the entry "Karl Marx", I don't just want to add references to pages of articles and books, but I also want to tag that entry with keywords, such as "communism", "superstructure", and so forth. In such a way, that when I click on "communism", in brings me to the seperate entry "communism", under which I can see, again, multiple references: "Marx", "Hobsbawm", "Lenin", and so forth.

What kind of program would you use for this?
I'm not a big fan of stuff like SPSS, although I can work with that. EndNote and Evernote don't satisfy me either.

I want a simple piece of software that allows me to make inter-connected entries of lists, in a way.

Currently, I'm thinking of simply creating my own wiki for this purpose.

Any suggestions?

A friend of mine uses Mendeley, which is a lot more advanced than EndNote and allows you to use tags and the like (or so he's said, I prefer working in complete chaos or using notebooks at most, and don't even use EndNote). You can also link to articles in pdf/on JSTOR I think. Apparently it's not too hard to use.

Of course you can set up a similar database in Access, but I've found it's too much work to do so for compiling books/articles.

Yeah, Berber Bevernage gave theoretische in my year as well, together with Gita. Seems like the course hasn't changed at all, because we also used Burke's text. They both seemed very good, over here lecturers tend to be either cynics or silent about their political preferences, and it's good to have people who are more involved, especially in such an open way. Your topic sounds very Bevernage-esque, did you pick it yourself? I noticed that in Ghent thesis supervisors had much more of a say in what the student does than they do over here, often directing them to use specific sources etc.

I also had Antoon Vrints as one of the professors for urban history, he was good as well, though less enthousiasmerend. But then he only had a minor part in the course, which is something you automatically get when it has four different professors covering about 2500 years of history. The medieval history onderzoekseminarie was better (it also had a smaller group, which made it easier to get discussion going).

Ah yes, professors like Bevernage or Dumolyn do not hide their leftist or marxist background at all, and that's a good thing.

I was very free in choosing my thesis' topic. He asked me what my personal interests were, and I responded that a) I have a deep personal interest in Middle Eastern politics and that b) I enjoyed very extensive courses on Holocaust historiography when I studied in Sweden. He thus concluded it might be interesting for me to take the Israel-Palestine case, for two reasons. 1) Under his department, the focus until now had been on either Europe or Latin America, hence it'd be interesting to shift to the Middle East for once. 2) No decent listing of reconciliation efforts of this kind has been done yet, so I'd be doing something actually new.

But it's true what you say - in general, professors seems to have a great deal in deciding the thesis topic, �nd a lot of my colleagues are being supervised very 'strictly', in the sense that their professor is very clearly indicating in what archives to search for what documents. They'd follow their pupil's progress from a close distance. This hasn't been the case with Bevernage (yet?). But I like that; I like to do all of this on my own, and I know that when I do need supervision or have questions, I can basically knock on his door anytime. It's one of the reasons I'm doing my thesis with him: last year i did my bachelor 'test' under his supervision and it was in similar conditions (although for different reasons: I was studying in Sweden, hence the fact that we didn't keep much contact).

Given we're talking academic study, is the University of Utrecht up to much for History? It's on my list of possible Erasmus placements. I'm leaning towards going to Uppsala or Budapest, but the Netherlands sounds like fun

Hmm, many people over here, or atleast at Trent tend to specialise in second year- my course in particular since most people go for subjects like Biochemistry, Biomedical or Genetics, if they don't stick with Biological Sciences which does a bit of everything. There's only 11 on my course this year.

In other news, I found out today I apparently have Auditory Dyslexia. Never would have crossed my mind, mainly because I didn't know it existed and since I was being tested more for Dyspraxia, or so I thought.

That may be the case here too, but I don't know much about how the Department of Biology works, I'm just speculating based on the list of the subjects(in Greek) tought there...

Well what do you plan to do post high school. German would be more useful in an engineering field while lain might be more applicable to a pre-med area.

Do you think that any of the schools you will apply to will have a language requirement for your degree? IF so I'd go with the German but if you don't have any language requirements then do whatever is the most fun.
