The Man with the Laughs

Gooooooooood-byyyyyyye Vietnaaaaam! That's right, I'm history... I'm outta here. I got the lucky ticket home, baby. Rollin, rollin, rollin'... keep them wagons rollin', rawhide! Yeah, that's right... the final Adrian Cronauer broadcast... and this one is brought to you by our friends at the Pentagon. Remember the people who brought you Korea? That's right, the U.S. Army. If it's being done correctly, here or abroad, it's probably not being done by the Army.

In honor of Robin Williams, I've decided to forsake the rules and simple post a lot of what made him special to us: his humor and ability to make us laugh!!

Genie: [turns into a cheerleader] Rick 'em, rack 'em, rock 'em, rake! Stick that sword into that snake!
Jafar: You stay out of this!
Genie: [Weakly] Jafar, Jafar, he's our man; if he can't do it, great!

When Christopher Reeve was in the hospital after his accident, Robin came to visit him. Reeve said this about that surprise visit:
Then, at an especially bleak moment, the door flew open and in hurried a squat fellow with a blue scrub hat and a yellow surgical gown and glasses, speaking in a Russian accent. He announced that he was my proctologist, and that he had to examine me immediately...it was Robin Williams...for the first time since the accident, I laughed. My old friend had helped me know that somehow I was going to be okay.
When Stephan Spielberg was filming "Schindler's List", Robin would call him to cheer him up. I think I only called him once, maybe twice. I called him when I was representing People for the Valdheimers Association. A society devoted to helping raise money to help older Germans who had forgotten everything before 1945. I remember him laughing and going 'thank you.'"

The KSP subreddit looks pretty good, unless I have no idea what a theme is. Should look good if you keep it rather minimal.

Finally got the achievement in Napoleon for declaring war on every country, never making peace and winning the campaign. Did it as Russia and liberated Poland, using it as a buffer between me and Prussia, as well as giving myself some trade. Then went and took Lemburg from Austria, had another army take Moldova and Wallachia from the Ottomans, then finally had a third army made and take Finland from the Swedes, topping the campaign off with the Lemburgian army taking Transylvania from Austria. Finished just in time too, as Napoleon and his hordes were breaking through Vienna, and I didn't have the armies gathered to face him and his two full reinforcement stacks. I have a total of three armies, one in Wallachia, Transylvania and Finland, and the Revolutionary is breaking through into Lemburg, which I can only give up to save my army. Not sure what I will do. There isn't any way I can face France alone, though maybe now that I have the achievement I can try and break the Corsican upstart.

Played on Darthmod btw.

We need a new casual game thread. Any ideas?

I'm super-jealous of the activity in AoKH's OT forum. Admittedly they're a bit crazy, we're all evidently over-inhibited historian types...

No? Prove me wrong.

You think so? Activity's really low in AOKH these days. Near Christmas vacations, we had at least 8 active threads at any point of time.

EoJ came up with the idea of playing as Roman Senators and doing politics and stuff with a gamemaster throwing external events at them and going off, fighting campaigns, etc. I liked the idea.

Yes, I remember. I'll be up for that if we can keep it simple - either playing or helping run.

... feck it let's start a dedicated thread.

edit: "let's" here meaning "someone please". I'm not gonna set up all on my lonesome if nobody else is going to show at least that much interest in organising...

I miss the old Ancient game. That was great fun!

But something would be good. But hopefully- something we can finish, and someone dedicated with a large amount of time on their hands?

I would play another map game, but then all of you are historians and if I step my foot a nanometer out of the line, I'm doomed. So, no. I would much prefer it to be played in AOKH.

Haha, it wasnt a nanometer out of line: it was a few feet. The things you were proposing just wernt attainable or do able. And the game master had the final say...

Further proving my point. For us non-historiophiles the game's about having fun, and details are mostly obscured. Hell, we had armies of English Longbowmen being beaten by Scottish peasants.

Henry VIII was pretty kickass, for all his faults. Endless wars and political intrigues on the continent, renouncing papal authority (a big one), building several awesome castles on the south coast, and spearheading England's first real nationally ratified exploratory expeditions to the New World around Newfoundland.

That said I know very little about any of the other Henries so I'm not really in a position to judge. Working on it...
