Although for all its durability, innovation, and ease of production, like almost all Russian tanks, the T-34 had one major flaw: the tank commander had to be the gunner. That wasn't corrected until significantly later and hasn't been continued in modern Russian tank design, which makes even their best tanks decidedly inferior to those of other countries.

Also, apparently long distance movement was an issue for the T-34, with maintenance an issue, and the tracks being the part of the tank most in need of repair.

The problem with tracks, as I understood it, its the same one plaguing tankers to this day- they work their many links loose until they can get thrown from their sprockets.

Daily maintenance (for some vehicles, thrice-daily) walking the track and checking for loose fittings can help. I do not know if the T-34 used end-connectors, but the Germans definitely did (fittings on the end of the track-blocks that ling the corners to the track-block directly ahead).

By the way, I was the only company-grade officer in my battalion who did not get side-lined during exercises for throwing track. Almost lost a track once or twice, but I heard the change in pitch in time to have my driver walk it back on. That doesn't count- no time lost dismounting to break the track, re-string it, then hook it back together. Just a simple "Driver back up, slowly" and we were back in the warfighting business.

If what I'm reading is correct, that's about it, coupled with the general lack of precision machining on the part of the Russians:

Judging by samples, Russians when producing tanks pay little attention to careful machining or the finishing and technology of small parts and components, which leads to the loss of the advantage what would otherwise accrue from what on the whole are well designed tanks.

It's a shame that Kelvin figures are quite so different from Celsius and Fahrenheit or they could be used every now and then to really confuse people (an indirect complaint about American / very old people throwing in Fahrenheit temperatures occasionally)

If you insist - what is Fort Hood and why would you go there in the summer?

You really should pay attention, Swampy. I almost always mark Fahrenheit temps with an F. These are actually European (Centigrade, Celsius, C) temps.

Foot Hood is a sandbox in the middle of Texas between Dallas/Fort Worth and Austin. It was in its time lauded the largest armor base in the Free world. I spent six weeks there playing with some of the (then) most advanced armored vehicles on the planet. It was almost as much fun as commanding those same vehicles a year later... We had a no-notice roll-out gunnery exercise the very first day.

Summer Temps (I was deployed there in the summer) exceeded 45 plus-degrees (C) with much more than that in the tanks. We often had the anti-gas overpressurization system turned on. Originally it was conceived to blow clean air into the tank, which when closed, would create an overpressure inside which prevented nasty gas and chemicals from seeping in through cracks to hurt us inside.

It also had hoses that one could connect to gas masks, for the same reason. However, if you had the system turned on and put that hose in your pants near your own hose, the cooling air now swirling around under your uniform kept you quite cool and happy. without this system on, temps inside the tank could exceed 50 plus (C), or 140 degrees (F). You go in for maintenance wearing a nice clean new uniform. You come out a half hour later with big white spots under your arms- layers of salt crystals.

Replenishing liquid was a major factor in survival. We would go to the Officers'Club afterward and order two pitchers of beer a piece. When the waitress brought that, we ordered a third. When she came with that one, we handed her the two empty ones she had brought moments before. Then we could enjoy that third one.

When speaking with little numbers, Norwegians often add plus or minus (warm or cold) before the degrees (C) so that one knows if we are talking about above the Zero or under it.

It looked like we were going to break our record for the hottest day, but we didn't quite. The record stands at 1939's 46.1 C. That would have been horrid as well as torrid.

From memory, the hottest recorded air temperature in a populated area Australia was 50.7.

Well, the triad (CO, XO and CMC [Top E9 on-board]) loved the movie, and after the people who controlled the movies played on-board played it for 5 days, on all three channels, continuously, it fell to us to either love it, or hate it. After that 5 day continuous playing, we were required to play it at least once a day. I fell on the love it side

Real tankers do not have heaters or Air-conditioning in their vehicles.

When it was cold, back two tanks up to within 10 meters of each other and let them run. They heat each other.

When it is hot, see the paragraph above concerning the over-pressurization system and how we used that to cool off.

Real tankers are extremely adaptable. We need no modern fanciful gadgets, only a guntube that shoots straight, a sight which can lay a dot where you want the bullet to go, and a targeting computer that can put that bullet through that dot.

Oh, but a tea-maker like the British have would be nice.
