The Man with the Laughs

Gooooooooood-byyyyyyye Vietnaaaaam! That's right, I'm history... I'm outta here. I got the lucky ticket home, baby. Rollin, rollin, rollin'... keep them wagons rollin', rawhide! Yeah, that's right... the final Adrian Cronauer broadcast... and this one is brought to you by our friends at the Pentagon. Remember the people who brought you Korea? That's right, the U.S. Army. If it's being done correctly, here or abroad, it's probably not being done by the Army.

In honor of Robin Williams, I've decided to forsake the rules and simple post a lot of what made him special to us: his humor and ability to make us laugh!!

Genie: [turns into a cheerleader] Rick 'em, rack 'em, rock 'em, rake! Stick that sword into that snake!
Jafar: You stay out of this!
Genie: [Weakly] Jafar, Jafar, he's our man; if he can't do it, great!

When Christopher Reeve was in the hospital after his accident, Robin came to visit him. Reeve said this about that surprise visit:
Then, at an especially bleak moment, the door flew open and in hurried a squat fellow with a blue scrub hat and a yellow surgical gown and glasses, speaking in a Russian accent. He announced that he was my proctologist, and that he had to examine me immediately...it was Robin Williams...for the first time since the accident, I laughed. My old friend had helped me know that somehow I was going to be okay.
When Stephan Spielberg was filming "Schindler's List", Robin would call him to cheer him up. I think I only called him once, maybe twice. I called him when I was representing People for the Valdheimers Association. A society devoted to helping raise money to help older Germans who had forgotten everything before 1945. I remember him laughing and going 'thank you.'"

So the Scottish referendum is imminent. Could this be the beginning of the end for the UK? Could the precedent be extended to other nations who have territories with unique identities that are in 'artificial states'?

I don't know about that; this is the first instance of a part of a larger nation that is a democracy contemplating breaking away. In pretty much all other instances (Spain, Georgia, Ukraine, etc.) with the possible exception of South Sudan, the "country" or region that breaks away is leaving an autocratic in effect (if not name) larger country. Even if Scotland does leave and is recognized as a separate state, I don't think it'll change much for other such efforts.

That's rather melodramatic. It's conceivable a vote for independence will shake up our economy for the next couple of years, or beyond if an independent Scotland should prove a failure; but by far and away it is Scotland which is at the greatest risk here. If by "the end for the UK" you mean the complete breakup of the constituent countries, there is as yet no serious prospect of Wales seceding based on polling, and the criteria for an exit by Northern Ireland are already enshrined in law and not likely to come about any time soon. If by "the end for the UK" you mean a loss of global influence, England would remain one of Europe's and Western civilisation's biggest players even if it were alone. I think that our decline of influence in the post-war period sort of stalled in the '90s, and like everyone else we're still feeling our way into the changing world order. The more subtle effects Scottish independence might have on the rUK mindset are in any case unforeseeable.

Polls have now closed, and we should have the result by morning European-time. I think I might actually be quite disappointed if they don't vote to leave now - it would be a bit of an anti-climax. I'm in quite an excited state.
Could the precedent be extended to other nations who have territories with unique identities that are in 'artificial states'?
Is a state artificial if it is not a (one-)nation-state? There is nothing geographically illogical about an England-Scotland union. It's a question of degree - does the heart of Scotland's remoteness from the heart of the rest of Britain make it different enough to be a separate country, or will the coastline be the decisive boundary? I suppose that's the question being decided.

Well, I guess that point is moot now.

55% of the Scots voted to stay. 85% turnout. Not bad, Scotland.

Not so much a victory for love between our "family of nations", as Westminster seems to be vaguely trying to portray it, as a victory of Scottish people's conservative instinct over hope and idealism. I wonder if that reflex would be represented across the UK in the event of a referendum on EU membership.

I must admit, I always figured the result would go like that ut I do feel a tad dissapointed nothing happened. Would also have been funny to see Cameron's face/reaction if they did leave.

It was a badly done campaign on many levels so it could have come down to that. The yes side seemed to focus on the demons of Westminster having singlehandedly caused all Scotland's woes and had relatively little (that I saw) clear expression of a plan on how everything would be better afterwards. "We'll get a better deal out of the breakup and so be inherently better off financially" perhaps.
The no side was shambolic in general and the mad flapping of the last weeks was ridiculous.

I think you might underestimate what monumental pain the the arse them separating off would have been. There's still a lot of work needed now given the rash promises of more powers but at least it's not likely to throw up as many compliance burdens for businesses operating cross-border (unless the politicians are idiotic, which isn't beyond the realms of possibility).

On a completely unpolitical note, I got half a toenail removed today and it was a very interesting procedure to watch. I also got today off because of it and I could not have had this happen at a better time had I tried.

Oh, and I've been moved up from worker bee to being work center supervisor, though I get a week and a half of training for what normally takes two months to train. On top of this, I'm going to be going from 5 guys in my work center to 2. Time to make myself shine!

The microbiology lab at Chesterfield hospital. Admitadly it's only up to a level 3 lab (which is seperated by a negative pressure room with an air-tight door to the rest of the lab anyway) so the worst I could likely catch would be TB or HIV if I was particularly foolish.
