All this talk of RTW on the ipad made me want to have a go for the first time in a while. Opened up a game as the Greek States- and about 14 or so turns in Macedon has been destroyed and those pesky Roman dogs kicked out of Greece. Now its time to get my economy in order so i can mass produce Armoured Hoplite armies. What games (if any) are you all playing these days. I actually got out my copy of Bladestorm, which is a battlefield game on Xbox 360 on the 100 years war. All this dlc of Fallout 4 makes me want to start yet another game of it, but the obscene price of the season pass makes me second guess that.

RTW is just so much better than Rome II. *sigh* I don't think it matters how old it gets - if Sega keeps on down its current path with campaign map graphics it's always going to be prettier.

I bounce between RTW and Tamriel (TES4: Oblivion). I have bought Skyrim and Medieval 2 Total war, ETW, and Nappy, but have not installed anything since RTW and TES4. Too busy conquering...

I started playing RTW again last night. Been years and years.

Anyone got any good mod recommendations? I've no idea which mods are sitll running. Also is it easy to install them via Steam?

Mundus Magnus, RTR, and Amazon Total War plus its little sister Amazon Total War- Reignited are all still active as far as I know.

Don't know how well they work with Steam, though.

As far as I know, modding with Steam isn't too hard, although I believe you'll have to go to Properties and edit startup options for mod switch. Otherwise, putting files in different places is the same as always.

I've also come down with a case of nostalgia for the games that made me fall in love with the franchise.

I uninstalled Total War: Warhammer and reinstalled Rome: Total War & Europa Barbarorum, Medieval 2 & Kingdoms with Europa Barbarorum 2, and Total War: Attila. Been playing EB 1 & 2 to get continuous inspiration for my ongoing writing projects and Attila to play as the Sassanids since I just finished reading an Osprey book focusing on Sassanian Elite Cavalry.

I bought Rome 2 and Attila, but I just don't enjoy them... really at all. Plus there's annoying stuff like the name of the "Atrebates" faction being mis-spelled "Atrebartes" *groan* - give me Rome 1's total disregard for historical accuracy over annoying tiny things like that any day! xD

Every now and then I try to play Rome II, but then just end up going back to RTW or leaping ahead a bit to ETW.

I played ETW quite a bit in July, it's pretty good - possibly the most underrated TW game imo. I did buy Napoleon but I just can't get into it.

I'm working on an improved version of my Keltoi Total War mod so that will obviously blow all other mods out of the water... obviously...

Stuff should work with Steam (although I thought it didn't for ages, awks)... modswitch definitely does anyway. I just use normal old-school desktop shortcuts for my mods.

That's why I'm playing the Europa Barbarorum mods. All the hard work from past and current members of the EB team have made the mods that give an informative historically accurate experience far above anything else. EB 1 in particular as the information in the unit cards alone is simply fantastic.

I've actually never done that with either of those factions. I tend to shy away from factions that weren't very prominent during the time period in the games and mods. Most I did was unify the Greek peninsula for the hell of it, then started a new campaign with a different faction.

Speaking of Europa Barbarorum, the team continues to credit HeavenGames as one of groups to give them critical acclaim on their main site. Quite nice of them to still remember us after so long

Well, I'm finishing my second year in uni this month, so many changes have happened. As for Greece, it hasn't changed much in the past 4 or so years, still the same problems. I assume that's why it doesn't receive as much attention anymore...:P

I agree with Rome 2, but i find Attila to be heads above the R2TW experience.

Having recently bought both games, I have to say that Attila is a far better game, although R2 can be improved with a dozen mods... Still, both games don't thrill me as much as the original RTW...

Given that I've 100% forgotten how to apply mods at all, I just pointed the R:TR installer at the Steam app path and it seems to a) work ok, b) I can still load vanilla RTW via Steam. Not entirely sure how that works.

Anyway, after playing basically constantly for 2 or 3 days I pretty much burnt myself out on the game again

Haha good advice, although if I'm playing games drunk I normally fall back onto ones I'm good at. I'm sure I used to play Rome on VH/VH back in the day but this time around I just didn't find it fun until I toned it back down to Normal/Normal

Ahahaha... I haven't played an actual TW battle in months... Except to test out if my unit skin fiddling has worked! I just autoresolve 99% of the time.

I'm sure I used to play Rome on VH/VH back in the day but this time around I just didn't find it fun until I toned it back down to Normal/Normal

I've barely ever played on harder than H/H. Never did play for the challenge, just to carve out my perfect kingdom and then defend it.

I tend to shy away from factions that weren't very prominent during the time period in the games and mods.

I feel like I should be insulted... and yet... nope, I have no comeback. My great nation did feck all that we know about in the grand scheme of things. Just a charming little slightly bloodthirsty backwater.

To be honest my main problem with Rome 2 and Attila is that the campaign map and to a lesser extent the UI are so frikking ugly and untidy. Maybe it's just me, but I really hate them. xD

btw Medieval Total War (1) is 66% off on Steam, I just picked it up for �2.50. Probably well worth a look at that price!

I do too. The only battles i really feel compelled to play on RTW are any faction vs the Romans (and egyptians) due to the massively skewed autoresolve calculations.

To be honest my main problem with Rome 2 and Attila is that the campaign map and to a lesser extent the UI are so frikking ugly and untidy. Maybe it's just me, but I really hate them. xD

I love the look of the campaign map, but do agree with you on the UI. I must admit- i am not a fan of the building system in post ETW games.

I (almost) NEVER auto-resolve. Not anymore.

Once I did. I had an army of like fifteen solid veterans units, full flags, and came up against a half-dozen beat-up remnants of some loser. Auto-resolve to clear them off the map and move on to bigger and better things. The computer drained my units and said I was defeated. Who commanded those remnants? Alexander?

After that, NEVER again on the auto-resolve. EVER. I will crush each and every maggot I come across now. I do not care if they number six men in rags. I will send my cavalry to trample them.

I too very rarely use auto resolve to avoid situations like the one Terikel experienced.

For anyone interested, the Ancient Empires mod for Total War: Attila has an estimated September 30th released date. I've been following the project almost since its inception a few years ago and I'm very excited for it. Think of the mod as having the time period and factions covered in Rome 2 with all the benefits (family tree, intriguing politics, settlement attrition, etc.) from Attila
