The Man with the Laughs

Gooooooooood-byyyyyyye Vietnaaaaam! That's right, I'm history... I'm outta here. I got the lucky ticket home, baby. Rollin, rollin, rollin'... keep them wagons rollin', rawhide! Yeah, that's right... the final Adrian Cronauer broadcast... and this one is brought to you by our friends at the Pentagon. Remember the people who brought you Korea? That's right, the U.S. Army. If it's being done correctly, here or abroad, it's probably not being done by the Army.

In honor of Robin Williams, I've decided to forsake the rules and simple post a lot of what made him special to us: his humor and ability to make us laugh!!

Genie: [turns into a cheerleader] Rick 'em, rack 'em, rock 'em, rake! Stick that sword into that snake!
Jafar: You stay out of this!
Genie: [Weakly] Jafar, Jafar, he's our man; if he can't do it, great!

When Christopher Reeve was in the hospital after his accident, Robin came to visit him. Reeve said this about that surprise visit:
Then, at an especially bleak moment, the door flew open and in hurried a squat fellow with a blue scrub hat and a yellow surgical gown and glasses, speaking in a Russian accent. He announced that he was my proctologist, and that he had to examine me immediately...it was Robin Williams...for the first time since the accident, I laughed. My old friend had helped me know that somehow I was going to be okay.
When Stephan Spielberg was filming "Schindler's List", Robin would call him to cheer him up. I think I only called him once, maybe twice. I called him when I was representing People for the Valdheimers Association. A society devoted to helping raise money to help older Germans who had forgotten everything before 1945. I remember him laughing and going 'thank you.'"

I found the same with Russian, once you get the alphabet is not that bad, arguably better than English to learn, (forgeting its my first language of course) and I found it easier than Spanish to learn, particularly gramatically though that could be that my Russian teacher was probably slightly better.

Makes me a bit sad I can't remember that much anymore.

I spent about an hour on the alphabet in total, but now I've got the hang of it, it's not very difficult.

I did German for 5 years and French for 3, so I tend to find languages slightly easier maybe

Eh, Russian has its tricky points - it ranks as one of the hardest languages to learn for native English speakers from memory. Some CIA ranking thing, or whatever.

Both English and Spanish are easy to get a basic grasp of - English because the rules are really easy, there are just lots of exceptions, and Spanish because it pretty much follows the rules to the letter. To perfect though... dunno which would be harder, to be honest. Probably English.

I can't comment on how hard it would be to learn fluently, since I'm not a languages person, they only reason I did both was because I went to a 'Language college' so we were forced to pick a language and then forced to pick another at Y8 and then to take one a GCSE. Seeing as languages don't go well with me, this was horrible

I got on better with it than Spanish because I found the grammar much easier to grasp, Spanish felt like it had loads of different ways to congugate words while Russian felt much simpler and clearer and I don't recall coming across that many exceptions. I think the hardest thing I remember was getting the stress right and how it changes the word's pronounciation, I used to be able to do it but not anymore.

I found Spanish to be quite easy to learn. Oh, there were exceptions to the rules, but mostly the language followed the rules, which were cler, conscise, and logical. Except the whole bit about which nouns were masculine and which were feminine.

German was better. Stricter. Dis ist der Rule, und we haf vays to make you follow zem. I liked German very much.

French.... Let us say that I am convinced their pronunciation of "vin" led directly to their being pillaged for centuries by drunken Vikings. (For those of you who do not know. vin means wine, but is pronounced vann. Vann is Norse for water. So when thirsty Vikings pulled up to the local tavern and asked for some water, and were served wine instead... well, you know the tale from there. It took us only a few hundred years to figure out that vann was called eau there.)

Norwegian is simple, especially the verb forms. All present tense verbs are the same, no matter the subject or singular or plural. English: I am, you are, he is. Norwegian: I er. You er. We er. He er. Past tense as well- I var. He var. We var. Add some separable prefixes and annonative suffixes (-en or -et at the end of a word means placing a 'the' before it) just to play with the minds of innvandrere and you are set.

Dutch is not fun. The main rule in the language here seems to be "you just have to know it." Piss off. I'd rather use German, but that is not tolerated here even a short seventy years after that little event... And speaking Norse? Forget it. They still haven't gotten over us overrunning large tracts of the country and settling in.

I looked at Greek, but it was Greek to me.

Arabic? To close to Hebraic, though sloppily written. No thanks.

I guess I will stick with Western languages. Gaelic looks interesting, and with enough dipthongs, weird combinations, poor spelling, and mystical rules to keep me occupied for days trying to formulate a sentence.

Knowing Gaelic is very useful in Scotland due to nobody speaking it. A girl on my course is getting her accommodation paid for her by the Gaelic Society if she speaks Gaelic in her flat! That's about £4000.

In terms of British languages, I used to be very pro-Welsh, pro-Gaelic... but they are firstly impractical, and secondly icons of the most divisive kind of nationalism in a country already a little too small to continue filling the shoes it has become used to... English is the world's language, if it's your mothertongue you should be jolly grateful...

I mean it's not as if they should be done away with - for instance I am still learning Welsh for the large and charming body of otherworldly literature written in that language, and its accompanying decidedly British unionist mytho-historical context. But they should have a "handle with care"... and not necessarily be mindlessly encouraged for the sake of laissez-faire political correctness...
