The Man with the Laughs

Gooooooooood-byyyyyyye Vietnaaaaam! That's right, I'm history... I'm outta here. I got the lucky ticket home, baby. Rollin, rollin, rollin'... keep them wagons rollin', rawhide! Yeah, that's right... the final Adrian Cronauer broadcast... and this one is brought to you by our friends at the Pentagon. Remember the people who brought you Korea? That's right, the U.S. Army. If it's being done correctly, here or abroad, it's probably not being done by the Army.

In honor of Robin Williams, I've decided to forsake the rules and simple post a lot of what made him special to us: his humor and ability to make us laugh!!

Genie: [turns into a cheerleader] Rick 'em, rack 'em, rock 'em, rake! Stick that sword into that snake!
Jafar: You stay out of this!
Genie: [Weakly] Jafar, Jafar, he's our man; if he can't do it, great!

When Christopher Reeve was in the hospital after his accident, Robin came to visit him. Reeve said this about that surprise visit:
Then, at an especially bleak moment, the door flew open and in hurried a squat fellow with a blue scrub hat and a yellow surgical gown and glasses, speaking in a Russian accent. He announced that he was my proctologist, and that he had to examine me immediately...it was Robin Williams...for the first time since the accident, I laughed. My old friend had helped me know that somehow I was going to be okay.
When Stephan Spielberg was filming "Schindler's List", Robin would call him to cheer him up. I think I only called him once, maybe twice. I called him when I was representing People for the Valdheimers Association. A society devoted to helping raise money to help older Germans who had forgotten everything before 1945. I remember him laughing and going 'thank you.'"

Which axioms in maths do you dispute? You can do quite a lot without very complicated starting assumptions (e.g. parallel lines not converging, apparently there's an alternative consistent set of rules/results if they do)

Without being utterly certain of how/why the universe works there's probably some room for doubt - presumably if this is a simulation then there could be situations when what we would think of as a solid rule turns out not to be - but, well I'll wait to see what you suggest.

Applied maths gets towards physics so there might well be some stuff those crazy chaps assume, to be fair to you.

BUTTS TC, yes and we haven't picked the team but I want to shoot! The rule about alumni is good for us because our ones are pretty awesome, while I'm hitting a few too

Oxford, Warwick and Nottingham will be the ones to beat, though- Oxford are current national champions, Nottingham have insane archers (though they don't always focus on the BUTTS events too much) but Warwick have some incredible alumni to back their already good team.

We are set for some good official and unofficial commentary on all the teams. Probably mostly towards Uni of (and their 'Nottingham lean') and our commentators but we also have some questionaires for everyone shooting to fill out so we also have some other random stuff to talk about. I think we also plan to make a banner to hang up as well.

Also we aren't too shabby! If BUCs is anything to go by atleast.

1+1=2

Prove it

Though there is a proof that 2+2=4 which assumes that 1+1=2 or something.

Actually quite an interesting debate.

As long as we beat Uni off I'll be happy I don't seem to recall much of Oxford but I know Warwick has a couple of gems so to speak.

Is that the guy who supposedly (from what I remember being told) started BUTTs? If so he's doing the official commentary while our social secs will abuse everyone. I should be helping, so I might try and abuse our commentators while I'm a it.

I have no idea what an Axiom is, but to prove 1+1=2 cant you just be physical?

As in i have 1 stick, when i give myself another stick i now have 2 sticks?

But no matter, such things are way out of my realm

The point being that is how we define what "1" and "2" are... 2 is defined as 2x1, otherwise written as 1+1, so it couldn't possibly be anything else... but I do find discussions of this sort interesting, because you can always feel something tugging at the back of your mind saying "yes, but how do you prove it objectively..."

Hmm, that's new to me. I was just told someone (who was described as the father of BUTTs or something) who did a load of stuff for it was also commentating. I'm not on the commitee, so I only get half stories on everything

Hmm, interesting.

Bloody objectivity. If my history extension class has taught me anything, it is that there is no such thing as complete objectivity..:/

Bad time to live in Aussie right now. We have bush fires springing up all over the place, and I doubt we have enough crews to handle them all. I have a few in my area which are terrible. At one place down the coast, the fireies are trapped in a town and retreating to the beach! Sad time for a lot of people right now...

There goes my answer

I was going to write some rubbish but deleted it all as tripe. There's an interesting list of axioms on wiki
and some quite interesting descriptions although I'd generally recommend maths.wolfram as a better place to look for maths things.

I'd still argue that maths is quite free from uncertainty because it generally works off of a known set of axioms whereas to apply things with physics or the real world is much harder (e.g. how many dimensions are there?)
posted 17 October 2013 16:09 EDT (US)     923 / 2504
I love how there are two totally different conversations going on.

Yeah, even those axioms assume that you don't imagine that the world exists outside of me(or you).

Gotta love doubt.

I think it's fair to say that while math may not be utterly objective (or even based upon constant axioms), it's still freer from uncertainty than the social sciences.

He meant to say "Uni of", which is a shorthand version of referring to the uni of Nottingham if you are in Nottingham Trent.

It's the same if you go to other cities with more than one university in them- eg Oxford brookes vs uni of.
