Topic Subject: Faction Reveal #4 - The Iceni

CA have released the next faction - The Iceni BUT - from that map on the site it looks like their lands are mainly in East Anglia, The Midlands, London and South East England. Well played on historical accuracy, CA!

I am thinking the Coritani and Atrebates are smaller tribes residing either in Wales, South West England OR Northern England/Scotland.

http://wiki.totalwar.com/w/Total_War:_Rome_II_-_Iceni_Faction
“Iron, conquest, pride.”

An Iron Age tribe of southern Britain, the Iceni are a proud and fierce people. They inhabit the flatlands, marshes and fens that border the North Sea, south of the Wash. They are practiced raiders, and frequently engage in battle with their tribal neighbours, the Coritani and Atrebates.

The Iceni principally make use of infantry when at war. Equipped with large oval or sub-rectangular shields and either a sword or spear, their main distinction from the Celtic tribes of the continent is the practice of painting or tattooing their skin, combined with a greater use of slings in battle. Although light cavalry are used, the Iceni and other British tribes are famed for their highly manoeuvrable war-chariots. After harrying the enemy with javelins, warriors dismount and engage in a fashion similar to the Homeric champions.

Far from simple barbarians, the Iceni have established a capital, known as Venta Icenorum, as well as large religious centres. Although based on agriculture, their economy is sophisticated – they even mint their own coins. Their culture, craft and wealth are illustrated in the form of fantastic gold torques and other jewellery worn by their nobles.

As a playable faction, The Iceni are brave and warlike; invoking the goddess Andraste as they charge into battle drives them to even greater feats of valour. Their expertise with iron makes the resource a particularly effective form of income for the tribe, as does their skill at raiding and looting. And as a warrior society, the happiness of the people increases with every fresh declaration of war.

The Iceni have the potential to dominate the Iron Age tribes of Britain. Beyond their shores lie Celtic Gaul and Iberia… can the Iceni unite them all under their banner?

General Rawlinson- This is most unsatisfactory. Where are the Sherwood Foresters? Where are the East Lancashires on the right?

Brigadier-General Oxley- They are lying out in No Man's Land, sir. And most of them will never stand again.

I think the Total War Wiki is overwhelmed right now, because I'm loading the website very slowly, but I'm very happy to hear the Iceni announced as the first Celtic or "barbarian" faction.

Anyone of even a passing knowledge of the history of Roman Britain has heard of the Boudiccan Rebellion and how the Iceni terrified the Romans when it looked like they might force them to abandon Britain. Can't wait to play as them and fight the iron beetles of Rome

Unexpected, but welcome. I have no doubt they'll be fun to play and might even be my first choice to establish a base of power on the Isles while I learn the game.

The unit models look incredible.

Interestingly though, this is going to cause one of the previously assumed factions to be ommitted;

Greeks, Seleucid, Germans, Gauls, Parthians and Egyptians left with only 4 playable faction shots. Whichever it is we'll see in faction DLC I'm sure - it's definitely a safe bet there will be at least 1 faction released in this manner.

BE STILL MY BEATING HEART!

The Coritani are in the Midlands, the Atrebates will have been interpreted as being a South-central tribe. So looking at the province map, yes, North and Southwest.

This is several steps up in historical accuracy from Rome I and I am absolutely delighted. It's not perfect - for instance they have wrongly extrapolated coinage and chariotry from the Late Iron Age back into the Middle Iron Age - but I am prepared to forgive them for that because it will make much better gameplay.

Also, I would like to point out that in the faction description, they didn't call them Celts once.

The choice of the Iceni for the British faction is not entirely historically logical, but from the point of view of game designers, it makes perfect sense. As has been pointed out, Boudicca is surely the most famous Ancient Briton of all, and this was her tribe. Besides, a player controlling these guys will rapidly conquer all his neighbours anyway and then the name becomes a bit superfluous anyway. I (almost) wholeheartedly approve of the choice of this tribe as a (and probably, reasonably, the) British faction.

Dear gods, thank you.

After seeing Edorix's euphoric convulsions I have to say that this has been the most entertaining faction reveal by far

Love you too <3

I can't wait to see how CA's implemented the Iceni's style of chariot warfare. I'm hoping we'll be able to right around the flanks of the Romans whilst raiding wooden death upon them with javelins, then once we've run out of missiles we'll be able to dismount our warriors and tear into the rears of the Roman beetles.

I'm looking forward to this a lot.

Logically, the Trinovantes or Brigantes would have been a better choice, but the Iceni are the most famous, so it makes sense there

I wonder how much CA have taken community ideas into account - some of the ones from here (e.g. http://rtw.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/forums/display.cgi?action=t&fn=46) were interesting.

The Durotrigues would have been in the region west of the Iceni - but given they're not mentioned perhaps they're not there. Would be good to see some OTT hill forts in game.

Oh My GOD. This looks amazing. Hopefully they will be on par with the Romans in terms of buildings and tech(not totally on par, just not as hamstrung as in R1). Cant wait, they will definately be one of my first choices.

There will probably be a pretty clear disparity between the barbarian cultures and the more 'civilised' Roman-Greek cultures, but no doubt their military and economy will benefit in other ways.
