HOWTO: Install patch 1.2 and use the unpacker.

This short guide will hopefully help you with installing patch 1.2 for Medieval II Total War and use the unpacker without incident.

Firstly, you will obviously need to download it. You can download it from many sites, a few of which are linked here.

This Patch is a hefty 650 mb, so if you have dial up, don't even bother unless you want to leave it running overnight. You may find it easier to use a friend's computer which has broadband, but even then it takes 45 mins minimum. And that's on a super fast connection.

Remember, install it to your main M2TW folder, not your data folder. I know it’s obvious, but some do make that mistake.

NOTE: Many people have had problems installing this patch and M2TW not working. I recommend that you uninstall M2TW, go to where you installed it, delete the SEGA folder (or the Medieval 2 Total War folder if you have another game in the SEGA folder) then reinstall. Then install Patch 1.2 straight on top. It has all patch 1.1 has and more. So there is no need to install patch 1.1 again.

Using the unpacker.

NOTE: BACKUP YOUR DATA FOLDER BEFORE YOU USE THE UNPACKER, AS CA ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE DONE TO YOUR GAME FROM USING THIS UNPACKER.

Using the file unpacker that comes with the patch can be a little confusing. First it’s a load of files you don’t often see. Batch files for one. Don't worry, you don't have to use these, the unpacker uses them when running. The only batch file you have to use is unpack_all.bat. Just click on it to run. you will have to type Y to all the questions to use it.

It should take quite a while to run, as there is 7gb to unpack. If it happens in a second then something is wrong.

Also, make sure the unpacker is in tools\unpacker. Otherwise it WILL NOT work. Some regions have the patch installing the unpacker in a different part of your M2TW folder. Admiral_Nelson can testify to that one.

Now, pay close attention to this bit, or your game will crash every time you go into a battle.
- NOTE: Due to a timestamp check, the following unpacked files will
cause the game to crash and must be deleted before the game is
launched:

data\descr_geography_new.txt
data\descr_geography_new.db
They're not kidding, delete them. If you don't, you will get an unspecified error every time you go into a battle and CTD.

The readme gives you all the info you need to get the game to read the files, but there is an easier way:

In your main Medieval 2 Total War folder, open preferences.cfg with notepad and scroll down to the bottom and type this:

[io]
file_first = true

then save and close the file. right click on the icon of preferences.cfg and go to properties. From there check the box next to read only and click apply. This will stop the game changing the file to the original content after one run. This way will not allow you to use show_err to find bugs, you have to run from a batch file for that, but it does allow mods to work.

I hope this guide has been of use to you and will help you in using the unpacker the patch. Any suggestions, criticisms, or improvements please don't hesitate to post.

You may also post bugs you have found with the new patch here as well.

I don't really know what a patch is but Iassume it is like a modification add on or something. What doespatch 1.2 do? I heard when the Timurids come the game crashes because of elephant artiliary units and also double handed weapon units suffer in version 1.0? Am I on the right track?

A patch is an official release from the creator of the game and normally fixes bugs and/or adds new features. I recommend you upgrade to it as soon as possible, following my instructions.

Ok I will do it within the week but can I ask what types of bugs does it fix?

It fixes errors in cavalry charges, and the shield bug and 2h animation bug.

Oh Yeh I was wondering what was up with the cavalry charge. Infact I have used almost all infantry in my campaigns whereas in Rome I almost exclusively used cavalry factions.

Bear in mind that the cavalry charge is harder t use, with the unit having to be still and facing a stationary enemy's side on flat clear ground for a good charge.

Cavalry just doesn't seem to be the same as in rtw but I haven't tried out horse archers yet and they are my speciality.

They are more realistic (no full on charges from two feet away) and can be devastating if you use them right.

Harder to use perhaps, but when implimented properly cavalry charges are much more devastating in M2 then they are in Rome.

Indeed, that man speaks the truth. Now let's not turn this into a cavalry discussion eh?

Hello all I am new to this forum and also to M2TW, and I have a pair of questions about that thread :S

What does the unpacker exactly do ? I Have installed the game and downloaded&installed the 1.2 pach, and the game works, but I don't understand what is the unpacker or what it does.

Second, in the first post Primo says that it is recommended to make a backup of the data folder, he means all the files and folders of the 'Medieval II Total War" directory or only the 'Data' folder ?

Thanks in advance, I hope I have posted my questions in the correct place, and forgive my bad english too -.-'

You only need the unpacker to moddify the game. most downloaded mods are self contained to do not need your copy of M2 to be unpacked to work and vanilla also dose not.

You should backup the Data folder in the M2 directory before unpacking. All unpacked files goto the data folder so if the unpacker causes corruption you dont need to re-install if you have the backup.

I just downloaded the patch to my mtw2 folder. Is that all I have to do? I played the game and my Croat axemen stil suck against lowly foes and pursuing fleeing enemies still cause my unit to split up. I am guessing I haven't done something right.

I opened up the folder MIITW_UPDATE2_EFIGS_RC_Final and there are 3 more inside it which are GamersHell, GH3D and MIITW_UPDATE2_EFIGS_RC_Final. What should I do?

When I clicked on MIITW_UPDATE2_EFIGS_RC_Final it said warning to run properly you must extract all the files. I gave me 3 options - cancel, extract files and run. Should I extract them?

Extract them to a mundane folder then run MIITW_UPDATE2_EFIGS_RC_Final. It should take a solid 10 minutes, if it dosnt take at least that long chances are it didnt install properly.

You can do this but it is quite tricky. I suggest contacting Foamy when he gets back from hols.

Unpacking without doing a few special bits & pieces means that you won't be able to find the unpacked files & you'll get a CTD when fighting campaign battles.

Try re-downloading. Is it the patch that's corrupted or your game?

The Patch is currupting an dht egame is continuesly missing data that it has there.
I've re-re-redownloaded it sixteen time now. Reinstalled the game at least half as many. Man i need to either get a new game or borrow it from someone else. thats my options i don't know if the CP or the game thats another problem. Any advice.

Have you uninstalled, deleted the sega folder, and deleted the registry entries? Also, try downloading the patch from somewhere else.
